Many Applications For Junior Farmers’ Course

Iled Cross Stresses Thin Ice Danger

The following timely warning has been issued by the Red Cross Society:

Once again ice is forming on our rivers. lakes and ponds.

Youngsters will be anxious to try out their new skates and hockey outfits. They will not be concern- ed as to the thickness of the ice.

Boys and girls will always thrill to the excitement of moving swift- ly on steel blades. The cracking of thin ice adds a dangerous flavor to the sport. In their impatience they may trust a thin skim of ice, formed over deep water, to stipport them. Often they venture far from shore and possible help.

The Red Cros in its accident prevention and water safety pro- gram recommends that everyone should stay off the ice until it. is at least two inches thick. Even then stay close to the shore. Thick ice will eventually come and then farther spots may be explored.

It is dangerous to go skating alone. Be sure you have a compan- ion.

, A pnie ladder or long rope should be handy to rescuers in case of an emergency. _

The wise skater. if he has any doubts regarding the thickness of the ice. will carry a long sturdy pole. This may he uscd as a support across the hole should he meet with an accident.

New Chinese Cabinet is Approved

President Chiang Kal-Shek ap- proved thc list of cabinet appoint- ees submitted by Premier Sun Po. who had some difficulty in get- ting candidates in China's critical hour.

Sun came up with a list of men who he said would "fight on until we can secure an honorable peace" The cabinet includes two former premiers, Chung Chun and Wong Wen-Hat). and Chang Chlh-Cliuag, now commander of the northwest ieadquarters.

Both Chang Chun and Chung Chili-Chung have advocated mak~ lng peace. They are ministers without portfolio. Sun F0 suc- ceeded Wong as premier.

Sun's remarks about an “hon- orable peace" was-seen by some as hinting the‘ government is ready to deal with the Commun- ists. However, a Communist spok- esman has said Chiang must go- or no peace. Chiangs approval of the cabinet suggests he doesn't intend to quit.

But Chiang himself said noth- ing publicly. '

Wins Rhodes Scholarship

, VANCOUVER, Dec. H — (C?) — A Canadian Army veteran is at his Fort. Worth, Texas. home for Christmas, freed on parole from a United States Army prison.

Millard J. (Tex) Allison, serving a six-months sentence for desert- ion from the United States Army in 194i. was paroled until Jan. 4 be- cause one of his children has measles.

Today in Vancouver, Capt. David Bell, Allison's former troop com- mander in the Duke of Connaughfs Own Rifles, said:

“This is the thin end of a. wedge. but I ‘want to see Tex get full Pardon and an honorable dis- charge."

Allison deserted the U. S. forces to enlist in the Canadian Army “We because he "wanted to see action." At that time Pearl Harbor was still in the future for the U. S.

Jones and Balzeer residents of this little fishing village which is on the base of the promontory that includes the famous scene Cape Blomidon. also heard a plane and then the crash into the sea.

Meawhile. from this search and rescue base, a helicopter returned after an afternoon's search of the area including Morden. Bad weather and consequent poor visibility hampered the searchers in the air and on the ground but officials said they would be starting out with planes, boats and ground parties in the morning.

Miss DEntremont, a third-year rurse at the Hotel Dleu Hospital in Edmundston, was enroute to West Pubnico to visit her mother. I-ler father died last year. She started training in October. 1946. and hoped to graduate next June.

WASHINGTON. Dec. 22—~(AP)- A new attempt to rescue 11 United States fliers marooned In sub-zero weather on n 7.500-foot ice cap in Greenland was reported imminent today.

Air force headquarters here said three more rescue planes-one of them equipped with skis and rocket motors for takeoff-move arrived at United States air bases in Green- land for the renewed effort.

Large Percentage 0f Seed Potato Acreage Passes Inspection

29,384 acres of seed potatoes. out of a total of 38.743 acres planted, passed seed inspection in the Prov- ince lust fall, according to a recent report of Mr. S. G. Peppln. chief in- spector in charge of seed potato certification in the Province.

It required 9,142 fields, planted by 5.784 farmers, for the total acre- age. 2.122 fields were rejected. Of those, more than half. or 1.222 fields, were turned down for Mosaic; 156 felled to pass inspection because of Leaf Roll; 225 were rejected for Black Leg and 22 for wilt.

Twelve varieties were planted in the seed acreage. 11.904 acres were planted to Irish Cobblers and 10.- 411 passed. Green Mountains topped the list with 13,877% acres but only 7.895 passed.

There were 7,835 acres of Se. bago potatoes with 6,383 passing inspection and 4,804 acres of Kat- alldlns with 4,503 passing,
