A Deadly Enemy.

is a most deadly enemy of the home ; more it is decorated the To mutitudes of our young men, and toa vast number of the humbler laboring classes, the saloon becomes a chandeliered and crimsoned gateway to hell! But all the drinking habits are not formed in the dram-shop or the billiard room of the clubhouse. A vast many take their first drink at their parents’ table or at social parties in private houses. I once officiat- ed at a wedding where there was a pop- ping of champagne corks like a discharge of musketry. Not long afterward I was called on to labor for the reformation of a drunken son in that very family. His parents had been his tempters. The fath- er who puts a wine bottle on his table and the lady of the house who provides—from false slavery to fashion—intoxicating bev- erages for her guests are playing with fire. If any one forms the drinking habit or is strengthened in such habit through their temptation, they are before God re- sponsible for the fatal mischief wrought. As the total abstinence societies have de clined, and pledges to abstaim have been too often abandoned, there is a percepti- ble increase of social drinking. Liquor on the table or the sideboard is often the first step to liquor in the club or the saloon or the restaurant. A family teetotal pledge hung on the wall would be abous the most ornamental piece of furniture in many a dwelling.—Dr. Cuyler.

To Make the Dairy Pay.

Determine in yotr own mind the amount of butter a cow should produce weekly to pay for her food and the labor of caring for her, Subject each animal to an individual test and dispose of all those failing to come up to the mark. Let the trial be a fair one and see that proper rations are given. Equal parts of wheat, oats and corn makea fairly good~ milk ration. If a smal! root ration can be added, the yield of milk will be ‘more satisfactory as a rule, Shelter the animals from the cold and wet by bat- tening the cracks or lining the stable with tarred paper. Make a good article of butter, put it up in attractive shape and brand it so that it may be easily recog- nized. — Buckeye.

Pigs appreciate potatoes more than dc most other animals. It is their nature to root and find such things in the ground, and next to following this natur- al propensity is the privilege of having sach things offered them. A smail amount may be profitably fed raw, but large quantities will not do unless boiled. Put into a tub before they are cold they should be mashed and mixed with milk and a little cornmeal. The quantity should not be large at first, but small and gradually increased.

It used to be the habit of farmers to kill the largest turkeys for market, and save for breeding some of the Jater broods that bad not got their growth. The idea was that with good feed and care these will be as large by spring as those hatched early in the season, and which get nearly their full growth by the holidays. But this is rarely the case. ‘The late turkey, small at Christmas, becomes stunted, and never attains the size it would if hatched earlier. Breeding from these im- mature and stunted turkers runs out the breed. Some experienced turkey breeders keep their largest fowls for breeding and retain them

But we observe that Sir Clements Mark- ham, president of the Reyal Geographical society, obtained some information during his memorable expedition to Peru. He states, as if it were well known in the neighborhood, that the caravan left the highway at a spot now called Azanjaro— a name which people derive from the Indi- an ‘‘asuan caran,’’ meaning ‘‘more dis- tant.’’ ‘‘Away from the road!’’ cried the priests. ‘‘ Farther away!’’ One always feeis the strongest reluctance to accept deriva- tions of a place name from a spoken word.
