The passengers, as they sat about in the saloon, consulted the glass and looked anxiously at each other, prophesying a storm, which, contrary to most amateur prophecies, actually came true, for on waking the following morn- ing Norah found there was a regular gale blowing.

She dressed and went in the highest possible spirits to her sister, whom she found quite prostrate and in a very dif-

Now Norah was perfectly aware that she was good looking and felt rather surprised that this strange young man should be in such close proximity to her without making the very slightest ad- vance toward acquaintanceship, but stolidly plodded through his breakfast in silence,

“I wonder if it would be lowering my- self to ask for the salt?’ she thought. “He doesn’t look married somehow,” and she glanced again at the neatly dressed young man, who wore no ring or jewelry of any kind except the plain- est and most solid looking watch chain, “Nothing venture—if he won't speak, well, I must. The rain will stop; the wind will go down. Those dreadful looking people will appear, and I shall lose my chance forever.” She silently rehearsed several forms over in her mind, finally deciding in favor of the rather ordinary, ‘‘Will you kindly pass me the salt?”

“Oh, he’s shy, that’s all,” she inwardly commented, as, blushing up to the roots of his hair, he pushed the saltcellar to- ward her without speaking.

“Why, I have got some in front of me all the time,” said Nora, and then she blushed tov, fearing lest he might have seen through the very transparent ma- neuver.

“So you have,” he said, speaking at last. But the ice being fairly broken the conversation could now run with ease into whatever course it was directed.

But all the same she found him very hard to talk to—he appeared so unrespon- sive to her own open, frank nature—and when he had gone after lingering over the breakfast table for an hour Norah came to the melancholy conclusion that she had done most of the talking herself.

“Perhaps he’s afraid of me. Whata refreshing novelty that would be!” and she wandered around the saloon, taking down one book after another from the shelves in hopes of finding something ex citing to pass away the time. Not a sin- gle fellow passenger had come into the saloon since the morning, and she had had her luncheon in solitary state at one end of the long table.

Norah loved being on the sea in every sort of weather, but this storm had im- pressed her in an unusual manner, mak- ing her feel how there was indeed ¢ serious side to nature. ‘How lightly she seemed to have taken her life so far in every way—even respecting Colonel Gerard”— And here her book slipped unheeded onto the floor, and unbidden tears dimmed the bright brown eyes as her mind went. back to the visit five months ago when she had first met him; to those rides across country in the crisp morning air; to the walks they had taken together among the faded bracken and leaves that merciless autumn had doom- ed to death, till one day she had sudden- ly realized that she was a child no longer—but a woman, with a woman’s heart.

“Oh, it was cruel—it was shameful of him!” cried Norah, stamping her foot with anger. ‘My only mite of comfort is that I don’t believe he knew I ever cared a rap for him, and I'll soon let him see that Ican flirt with others besides himself.” And getting up she flung open the piano which stood in a corner of the saloon and began to play. At first care- lessly, viciously almost, but gradually her anger died away, and she forgot her woes, forgot the storm that was raging outside and the storm of thought that had been running riot in her own brain, as she threw her whole soul into the mu- sic and rocked and soothed her mind to peace once more,

She was so utterly absorbed that she never heard the saloon door open or the quiet steps of the young man half cross the room—then stop. But his presence there seemed to change the current of her thoughts. The earnest, wistful look gradually left her face. She broke into

issue or that he discovered the danger. He merely formulated one and concreted the other.

It has always been so. When the con- ditions are ripe, there arrives a man who forges them into action. Dr. Parkhurt arrived, so far as we are concerned, on the morning of Feb. 14, 1892.

Three years. Consider it. He stood up alone and hurled his honesty in the face of Tammany. Looking back now across the narrow strip of time, with this book, ‘Our Fight with Tammany,” before us, all historic precedents are pushed out of sight by the celerity, the completenessand the uncompromising sincerity of the tri- umph.

That 14th of February is so close behind us that, even iu the rush and pressure of our life, we can still measure its initiative and recall the first effects. The solitary clergyman gave voice to the deep-seated but until then the wnexpressed loathing of all the conservative elements of our metropolis. This is*what he said:

“There is not a form under which the devil disguises himself that so perplexes us in our efforts, or so bewilders usin the devising of our schemes as the polished harpies that, under the pretense of gov- erning this city, are feeding day and night on its quivering vitals. They area lying, perjured, rum-soaked and libidinous let.”

One incident in his fight is worth refer- riug to, as his reference to it in the book marks with fine emphasis his own inde- pendence of character, and his admirable renunciation of the mawkish sentiment- ality qf our times. When he delivered his first sermon he presented only the facts of general report, and he was assailed from all sides with the challenge to pro- duce names and places. A thousand clergymen had been squelched before by that invitation—which was also a threat. This time it encountered the wrong man,

Dr. Parkhurst set out and got the facts for himself. He looked at them squarely in all their blistering loathesomeness. He consorted with pubiicans and sinners. He talked with the unmentionable, his eyes and his ears bore witness to the infamy and docketed the open disgrace ef the police.

Then he came back to his pulpit sick at stomach, but brave at heart, pushed the Bible on one side and piled up his affida- vits. “For four weeks you have been wincing under a general indictment,”’ he said, “that called for particulars. This morning I have given you particulars, 484 of them. Now, whatare you going todo with them?

‘Don’t tell me Idow’t know what Iam talking about. Many a long, dismal, heart- sickening night, in company with two trusty friends, have I spent since I spoke @:: this matter before, going down into the disgusting depths of this Tammany-de- bauched town, and it is rotten with a rot- tenness that is unspeakable—a rottenness that would be absolutely impossible except for the connivance, not to say the pur- chased sympathy, of the men whose one obligation before God is to shield virtue aud make vice difficult. Now, that I stand by, because before Almighty God I kuow it, and I will stand by it though buried beneath presentments as thick as leaves in Vallombrosa or snow flakes ina March blizzard.’’

Then comes the reference to his personal responsibility. “It is claimed that work of so dirty a character I ought to have hired some one to do it forme. I loathe the suggestion and I loathe the craven spiritthat prompts it. If it was vicious in me to visit those places myself it would have been equally vicious with an added element of damnable cowardice to get some one to do it for me!” ?

Popular morality which had taken to reading Seneca and Marcus Aurelius was a little startled at this voice of John Knox. But the tones of it were delightfully hearty to purged ears, and they became a rallying point for all the extremes of a sufferirg community.

You will have to read Dr, Parkhurst’s book to find out conmestedly.
