Cotr’s Great Circus was lately wrecked on its way to Kansas City. After its arrival there, a Kansas. City Times’ reporter found John Sawbright, its veterinarian, rubbing the injured animals with St. Jacobs Oil. He said it was the best remedy known for injuries to horses, and was so very clean to use.

Two daughters of the Hon. John B. Dickie, of Truro. died the flatter part of last week, from diphtheria. The whole of the family, (six) were prostrated with it, but four are now slowly recovering. The disease was pro- nounced to be of the very werst kind. The eldest daughter. Susan, was in her twenty- first year, She was engaged teaching school two or three days before she died. — Halifax Herald. ee

We again have to draw attention te the ridiculous arrangement of sending mail matter from Summerside to Travellers Rest, to Char- lottetown P. O. for distribution. The village in question is within three miles of this town, but it is not unusual for mail matter to take the best part of a week to reach it. The train from here to Charlottetown passes close by it, but instead of the mails from Summerside being left, they are taken to Charlottetown tc be distributed and returned the next da or the next week. People from Travellers’ Rest are continually complaining about not receiv ing, till the following week, papers mailed at the Summerside Post Office on Wednesdays and Thursdays. — Pioneer.

This is one of our leading thoroughfares in winter, The people of West River, Clyde River, North River, South Shore, Nine Mile Creek, Long Creek, Big Point, Canoe Uove, Black Point, Bonshaw, and adjacent Settle- ments, all enter the City from the ice at the Western terminus of Richmond Street. Hence the very great necessity of keeping this indes- pensable passage free from rubbish and pui- tances of every description. At best this entrance is narrow, aud therefore the greater the necessity to keep it free from obstructions | of every kind, At present there are two) sticks ‘of timber thrown across the street a short distance above high water mark, and » boat placed thereon, which, if net removed immediately must preve dangerous te those who travel in that direction. M., be says; “The cost of Gas as compared with other illumin- ants is much more economical when rightly used, than many suppose, From experiments made for this purpose, the following results have been obtaincd, They were made by burning samples of Devoe’s Brilliant Oil and ordinary Oils, and testing their illuminating power, It was found that Coal Gus costing one cent at ¢3 per thousand feet, gave @ light equal to 18 candles, while Devoe’s Brilliant Oil consuming 27.4 grammes cost- ing halfa cent, gave a light «qaal to 9 candles,
“A good Argand or Johnson's Burner, the Burner’s used in the last experiment, will therefore give the light of 2 ordinary Oil Burners in direct comparison, at no greater expense in the cas» of the finer and safer grades of Oil, Lights, however, on the anthor- ity of Scientists, are not to be compared in direct proportion, but in preportion to the squares of their powers, and such a com- parison with the case of the use of (as, its cleanliness, freedom from odor and dangers, renders its use desirable wherever it can be troduced,”
As the above experiments were made with Gas at $3 per 1000 feet, and not consumed through Bray’s Burners, it will readily be seen how wuch more economical it is to con- sume Gas instead of Oi), when its price is only $2.63 per 10.0 feet as now charged here when consumed, more especially through Bray’s Burners,
Messrs, Goodwin & Co., of Philadelphia, the well-known menufacturers of Scientific in- struments for testing the illuminating power of Coal Gas, etc., say in their Circular to Gag Compauies : “In presenting the Bray’s Stand- ard Patent Slit Union Burners and Lanterne, for which we are the sole Agents in the United states, to the attention of the public, we are convinced that we are filling a want long felt.’ They further add: “ The yield of light from these Burners is 12 to 20 per cent, greater per cubic foot of Gas consumed than that from any flat flame Burner hitherto in-
