The Forty-Fifth Annual Report of

tile Manufacturers Life Insurance Iuonlpany for the year ending Dec- clnber 31st, i931, as submitted to Qoiicyhoidors and Bilsrehoiders at wile Annual Meeting lfeid on the sist January, shows a. record of ‘steady progress. l The total Assets of the Company amounted to 5115521218., an in- =crcase of Six and a Half Million lDoiiars over the previous year. 0f {this amount $45,439,608. was invest- §od in Government, Government iiiuaranteed, Municipal, Public Util- ‘ity and other bonds. First Mort- gages on Approved Real Estate comprised $34,406,320. Preferred and Common Stocks amounted to $2,- 500,548., of which $1,111,902. was in- vested within the last two years. All securities were valued on a conser- vative basis, the value at which tiley are held in the Balance Sheet being less than the value determin- ed by the Dominion Department of Insurance.

The New Insurance issued amounted to $76,597,820, a decrease in comparison with 1930 oi‘ less than 7%. The total Insurance in Force amounted to $542,449,546.

Payments to Policyhoiders and Beneficiaries again constituted a record, amounting to $14,348,063. Beneficiaries under death claims received $4,172,860, while Payments to Living Poiicyhoiders for Matured Policies, Annuities, Dividends, etc., amounted to $10,175,195.

The earnings of the Company continued to be satisfactory. In ad- dition to maintaining a Reserve for Dividends to Poiicyhoiders amount- ing to $6,019 818. and a Contingency

The completion of this link ap- pears to me to be particularly op- portune at this time when our statesmen the world over are giv- ing their most serious considerat- ion to projects designed to create closer economic union between the British peoples.

In the pursuit of this laudable ambition, the Trans-Canada. Tele- phone Systcm from Halifax to Vancouver is an achievement of no mean significance. It binds more closely together provinces which loss than fifty years ago were first unitcd by social and commercial ties male possible by railroad con- struction.

Today we open another route of communication. By it, the voice of business and friendship can tra- verse the four thousand miles from sea to sea in, I am told, one-thir- tieth ol.’ a second.

This great accomplishment has been made possible through the painstaking development of the invention of s. Scottish-Canadian who, seven years after Confederat- ion first demonstrated in this country the practicability of trans- mitting ‘ words over wires.

Since the time of that invention by Alexander Graham Boil, the telephone has become an integral part of our social and commercial life. It has been provided for the peoples of the various provinces under government ownership in some places and through llTlVll-I-l? entofilrlse in others.

It is a tribute alike m both pub- llo and private ownership that the seven participating organizations should have worked together in hormone! over I period oi’ some lfih Yell"! to overcome stupendous difficulties and bring about the consummation which we celebrate today.

I am sure I am only expressing a sentiment common to nii of lls when I say that I sincerely trust that this Trans-Canada Telephone System will play a significant part . in increasing and strengthening the existing good will and esteem between the inhabitants of every art of this Dominion, rendering its vast distances no longer a bar- rier to communication between Canadian citizens though they be

separated from one another by hundreds of leagues within this continent.

Let us also express the further and wider hope that this system will serve to unite in ev'cn closer bonds of fellowship the citizens of our whole empire though they bc separated by the oceans lying be- tween us and our sister nations within the British Commonwealth.
