McEachen, E-q., of New York City, formerly of Charlottetown, recently visited Chicago a: a delegate from the New York Caledonian Club to make arrange- ments for their proposed celebration at the World’s Fair city im July. Whilst in the west he appears to have had an eye to business of a private nature for the La- crosse, Wisconsin, Chronicle publishes the following : —
** The International hotel, corner of Pear! and Front streets, will be opened in about smonth, The present owner, Mr. James C. McEachen, a pro-sinent attorney of New York city, and the lessee, Mr. A. D’Orville, ‘rived in the city Monday for that pur- pose. It will be remembered that the International changed hands about eighteen months ago, a gentleman named Howland being the buyer. It was the latter's inten tion to open immediately, but for some cause he did not doso. About six weeks ago Mr. McEvchen becama the owner and atonce decided not to let the property remain useless. Terms were accordingly arranged betweeen Mr. D’Orville and himself with the above result mentioned. Mr. D'’Orville isthe proprietor of the Del Monte restaurant, cafe and billiard parlor, Columbus avenue, New Yorx city, and a man of experience in the hotel busiress,
**To a Chronicle reporter yesterday he stated that the International would be run on a first-class basis with a $2.50 a day rate. Reply to “Impartiality.”
Sir,—Your correspondent ‘Impartial- ity” in yesterday's EXaMINER was in too much haste to ventilate hia supposed facts anent the Briggs case and the Presbyterian General Assembly. An impartial critic would wait to see what action the Assembly would take in reference to such as violated its rules after tuflicient proof had bun given. ‘Where has the Presbyterian Assem bly winked at such infraction of its rules ? Does he know of any ease of such laxity ? He says that all the world knows that Presbyterian ministers subscribe to one thing and teach the reverse. This is a very grave charge and should not be made with- out proof, I look in vain for the proof. It is not there. The mere quotation of the confession, or the doctrine of predestina- tion is not proof that ministers generally disbelieve in it. Lat him state his authorities. The only proof admissible in the case is the production of one or more ministers names, who have trangressed and after full proof was given, were allowed to retaintheir places. The Presbyterian church is this day more pow- erful for good than at any previous period.
