‘Ilha annals o! Brackley Toint often refer to the wooden ships that were built in that locality in the early days. On reading those local records I was reminded of a story I heard nnny years ago, concerning two amateur shipbuild- ers who lived on the outskirts of Strides-land. Oounty Durham.

Whatever they may have been in the past our woodlands are now too small to give this. and other birds, the protection they seek.

In some regions a, prejudice ex- ists against this Woodpecker. ow- ing to its propensity for drinking the sup of certain trees. Not every tree, even u! the same species, has a sap which attracts the bird; but

is suitable the Sapsucker will re- sort to it for weeks at a time.
