April 13 — Total operating income of Imperial Oil Ltd. was greater in 1049 than in 1948. but earnings trom manufac- turing, marketing and marine sources dropped from 93-100 to 72- 100 of one cent per gallon in spite of the fact that sales increased by eight per cent in volume, accord- ing to the compo y's.annual re- port issued today.

This was due principally to a slightly reduced sales realization in 1949 and to ‘an increase in op- crating costs. Earnings from oth- er income were aBdI.ICGd chiefly because of the loss of dividends resulting from the sale of shares in International Petroleum Co. Ltd. and Royalite Oil Co. Ltd.

Most significant development in the Canadian petroleum industry during the year was the growing production of crude oil which early in the year made it possible to eliminate imports from the U.S. into the prairies. This bencfitted the Canadian economy by saving ‘U. S. Iunds and held prairie lucl bills in check by reducing trans- port cosis. states G. L. Stewart. president of Imperial Oil.

Net earnings from all sources including investment income were $23,932,985, or 89.20 cents a share.

Exploratory drilling carried on or shared in by Imperial in Al- berta totalled 311,940 feet during 1949. Development drilling by Imperial and partners totalled 1.- 090,843 feet, and the wells drilled in proven areas resulted in 215 oil wells. two gas wells and seven dry holes.

At the end of the year Imperial had 247 producing wells at Induc- Woodbend; 101 at Rsdwater; two each at Golden Spike and White- mud; one apiece at Eon Accord. Simmons, Normandvllle and Ex- celsior. At Turner Valley it had an interest in 25 wells and at Norman Wells in .

ln southwestern Ontario 10 exploratory and 30 development wells were drilled. An important contribution to the area's gas ra- servas was made by the discovery of the Payne gas field. At the end of the year Imperial had 38 gas and oil wells at Escher, 13 gas wells at Kimball and one oil and seven gas wells in smaller Ontario fields.
