Arthur Legrand Stattord, who cloim- ei to bea natural son of the Karl of | Dunraven, landed in Now York from | an [nman steamer, the latter part of | November. At the Nicholas Hotel he | met sporting men, and they decided to | go to Muine, hunting and fishing. On the way they stopped at Bangor Me., where Stafford made the acquaint- ance of a New York lady, Miss Gasce. Both became desperately smitienjan wlien Stafiord started for the woods they had plighted their troth. On December Slat Stafford left the camp. with his rifle, for a stroll. Shortly after a hard

snow storm set in, and Stafford did not return, hia companions went to find him. They were unsuccessful and returned to the

camp about midnight. Early in the morning of January 1 they again set out, About three miles from the camp they found Stafford in the firm embrace ofa she-bear, and both were frozen. A knife waa sticking in the left fore shoulder of the bear. A short distance away # balfgrown cub with a kuife wound in its beart was discovered. The guide said that Stafford had attacked the cub first, and was then sat upon by the bear.

Stafford’s companion went to Bangor | and told the story to the young lady. She lost her reason, and is sow in a des- perate condition, She was sentto the Elmira Asylum.

A few weeks ago Mr. and Mrs. Glad- stone, with Miss Gladstone, were about to leave Hawarden Castle, to meet at Leughtoa Hall, the Dake and Dachess of Westminister;butit was found that the the Premier's coachman was so ill as to be unable to drive,whereupon an effivient and noble substitute was found in Lord Aberdeen, who is said to have put ona coachman’s attire and to have driven the distinguished party to Loughton Hall and back to Hawarden.

Saloonfkeeper Shaw, also, having been convicted on the thirteen counts,was sentenced to pay $1.00 and costs on each count, and to spend thirty days in jail, and stay there uutil he paysap. Saloon keeper Pitman got $1,100 fine and a month in’ jail. Upon twelve dealers the Court impoxed fines aggregating $7,600, with $3,000 costs aod ninety days in jail.

He says he has seen wore young men druuk the past year than at any time before. He favors every method for the establishment of temper- ance, moral suasion, legal suasion, pledges for those who can keep them, societies that strengthen men by the sympathy ot fraternity, and, in fact, whatever legitimate way may attain the much desired end. He sees no cause for discouragement in the prohibition reversals in Obio and Iowa, for he feels that every great priaciple knows defeat several times befere it achieves its final triumph.
