The UPEI Centenial students, those Prince

Edward Islanders 60 years of age or over attending e classes at the university were honored by the Student Union on Monday Feb. 22nd.

Honorary Lifé’ membership in the student union and its attendant privileges were given to the 64 Centenial

students by the outgoing council as one of its last official acts. Pat Duffy the past UPEI-SU President, on behalf of the Union, presented the students with their membership cards.

Then along with Bob Gray and Norbert Moran two former ~ Vice Presidents, hosted a casual party for the Centenial Students.

"scholarships" ,and"degrees'

manifest an alienation due

to being categorized as "students"which is not a

real phenomenon but is

rather,an abstration. Individuality is forgot- ten in favour of the safe role of "student". Correspondingly, the

individual who attempts to play the abstract role of "professor" must,of necess ity, experience alienation which is manifested by showing undue concern over such matters as "money", "status", and "evaluations'.

Two abstractions ('st- udent" and “professor") ca- nnot relate effectively to the advantage of the indiv- iduals involved in these roles; consequently, the primary aim of the educaté# ive attempt, understanding, is placed subordinately to those things which will as- sure the"'survival" of the individual i.e. ,money,sta- tus,etc.

I am stricken with shame for the "professor"; they appear to me as chil- dren in adult clothing. The "students" I fear,are hea- ding in the same direction.
