Approximately 154 multiple choice questions were ans wered by the students, with the questions being roughly divided into three different categories: (1) information regarding age, sex, grade, religion, and parental status; (2) stu-'- dent's level of use and .~ experience with drugs, with particular emphasis given to alcohol, marijuana and nicotine; (3) attitudes towards drugs, sources of information about drugs, and parental use of alc- ohol and drugs.

In the report, compar— isons are made between this survey and the sur- veys which were done six and ten years ago, in or— der that trends in the use of alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco might be establish ed. There are also compar- isons between the alcohol and chemical use in Prince Edward Island students and

Dr. Leo Killorn, president of the Ale-i ohol and Drug Problems Institute in Charlotte— town, released a report on "Chemical Use Among P.E.I. Students, 1982" This survey was conduc- ted in May of 1982 by the institute and the report was compiled and written by James Killorn, Guidance Councellor at Stonepark Junior High school in Sherwood.

This is the third sur vey of alcohol and chem- ical use among highschool students on Prince Edward Island which has been con ducted by the institute, the previous two occuring in 1972 and 1976. On htis occasion, 1,559 Prince Edward Island students from grade VII thrdugh

PRIVATE ADDICTION CENTER NOT FEASIBLE.

The Minister of Health and Social Services, Hon curable Albert Fogarty, announced that recent major improvements in public addiction services are among the reasons why a private addiction center is not feasible for P.E.I.

"The report of a study conducted by Mason rManage— ment Inc. concludes that the percieved need and potential benefits are heavily outweighed by risks including financial failure," stated Mr. Fog— arty. '

"I ccmmisiOned the study in response to sug- gestions that such ,a pri— vate center could meet the needs of people who in the past have travelled outside the province for treatment in Ontario and the U.S.", the Minister

added.

Mr‘. Fogarty explained that the study showed that such out-of—pro— Vince travel was now decreasing rapidly, as new and better local treatment programs at public centers were beg- inning to develope a rep-

' utation for effectiveness.

"Accreditation would per- mit the center to earn per diem fees from public pro- grams and from same'priv- ate insurance programs but according to the report this accreditation would be highly unlikely. This center mild, therefore, need to depend on Govern- ment subsidies, probably to no net economic ad- vantages. It could also be percieved as a special . center for the 'elite' , and cause more controversy than benefits," added the Minister.

"At a time of economic restraint, there are more potential benefits to be gained through further ef- forts to improve the pub- lic services and over the last three years ne rehab— ilitation, family care, and counselling programs, as well as expanded fac— ilities, at the local lev— el have been gaining a greateracceptance by the

people," stated Mr. Fogarty.
