Farm Notes.

There is no more healthful method of keeping the stables, sheds, and pens clean, than to give them a good coat of lime wash. he wash is easily and quickly made as follows: Slake a bushel of fresh linie in a pork or other ‘barrel, with water enough to make a thick paste, after which fill up the barrel with hot water, and let it stand for a. few hours. The wash may be applied in various ways, It may be spread ppon the walls with a large white-wash brush, and no pains need be taken to doa neat job. Whatever wash falls. upon the -fioor in the operation is not lost, but helps to sweeten the stable.or stall. The quick- est and most satisfactory, method. is to use a foree.pump, by which the lime-wash can be thrown into every corner.— American Agriculturist for September.

My crop will fall short over 100 bushels: I was going to send the old) woman ona visit to York State this fall; but I guess she’ will have to'stay'to-home.” But potatoes are certainly a big'crop?” ‘‘Yes—potatoes are a big yield; and that’ will cut the price down to 2 shillings a bushel. 1-was going to let the old woman get a false set of teeth this fall; but the way things look now rather goes to show that she’ll have to gam along unitil next year.— Wall Street. Insane Asylum Exposures at N. Y.

Samuel O. Bright has begun a suit for $25,000 against W. R. Sprague and Weeks Washbourne, two physicians, upon whose certificates O. Bright was sent by his family, who objected to his marriage, to a Middletown, N. Y.-insane asylum, whence he was released by his young wife, who established his sanity in Court, It has been discovered that W., J.. Hamilton, for the past six years confined ‘as a lunatic iu Ward's Island insane asylum is perfectly. sane - He was ordered to be committed by Police Justice Kasmire, before whom he was taken on a charge of drunkenness. Kasmire himself was then insane, and has since died from insanity, Hamilton, upon protesting, was straight-jacketed and suf- fered such horrors that he was afraid ever to protest. again. His friends supposed him dead. ,The case was brought to light through the escape from thesame asylum of T. D; Maitland, another sane man, after several years’ imprisonment as’ a lunatic, who says many such cases came to the asylum.

Matthew Arnold. in America.

The'Toronto Globe says that an amusing in- stance of the inability of Englishmen to un derstand American exaggerative honour is furnished by Mr. Matthew Arnold in an ar- ticle on America published in a recent num- ber of the Nineteenth Century.’ Mr. Arnold says some undeservedly harsh things of the Americans, and to make out his case gravely quotes a statement of the New York Natien to the effect that in the United States ‘‘not one man in a hundred thousand has either the manners or the cultivation of a gentleman, or changes his shirt more than once ‘a week, or eats with a fork.” Of course the Nation never intended this to be taken seriously, but Mr, Arnold's sense of honour ‘was not. suffici- ent toprevent him accepting it as a liberal depiction of American manners.

Oatmeal.

Oatmeal in all its various forms is good’ and’ shotild be used, atleast, once a day by évery ‘one in’ winter, either in the form of ‘porridge or pudding. Oatmeal being about three times as rich in oil as wheat, is a splendid heat-giver in cold weather, and when properly cooked is very digestible, and enjoyable. .In the form,of cakes, we should not recommend it as a regular article of diet.

The submarine vessel now being con- structed at Bucharest, it is claimed, will ac- complish that which no other submarine craft has ever been found equal to. The plan contemplates a vessel moving under water for twelve hours without any renewal of air. Stéam_ is the motor employed) and the speed reckoned upon is greater than that attained by sailing vessels: '" Practically the- management consists. in_simply sinking the vessel by opening certain valves, but its return to the surface involyes more complex operations. An electric light, which is to be supplied, will, it is ascertain- ed, render objects fairly distinguishable. For renewal of air it is not necessary that the vessel rise to the surface—the | means resorted to for this purpose being an appar- atus that can be sent up, and which, by working a pump, forces air into suitable receivers.
