IV. The Volunteer Militia allowance and privileges under this Act, shall consist of Nine Companies, to be indicated by the Commander-inChief ; each company not to exceed fifty non-commissioned officers and pri- vates, with a due proportion of commissioned officers in addition thereto.

V. The Volunteer Militia entitled to receive allowance,under the last preceding section, shall be provided with arms and accoutrements, to- gether with an allowance of one pound per annum, each man, for clothing, and no more, for any other purpose, and also, with a suffi- ciency of ammunition, not exceeding fifty rounds of Ball and Fifty rounds of Blank Car- tridge per annum, and, in addition to other exemptions by law secured to them, they shall be exempted from the performance of statute labor, or paying commutation money therefor.

VI. Nothing in this Act contained shall prevent the formation of other Volunteer Com- panies, but such companies shall not receive or

claim any allowance under this or any other Act of this Island.

VII. Companies of Volunteer Militia may make bye-laws for their internal government, in time of peace, and may impose fines for the breach of any bye-law, but said bye-laws shall be of one uniform code for all the companies, and must be approved of by the Commander-in- Chief before being of any force or effect. '

VIII. The twenty-fifth, thirty-fourth, thirty- seventh and forty-third sections of the said re- cited Act shall be and the same are hereby repealed.

An Act to amend the Act of the 'l‘hirty-first Victoria, Chapter. Sixteen, intituled “ An Act for shortening the language of Sheriffs’ IDeedsf’

E it enacted by the Administrator of the Government, Council and Assembly, that

when any person who has held the office of Sheriff in this Island is deceased, or shall here- after die, then the Deputy, or acting Deputy, of the deceased Sheriff, shall have power, and he is hereby empowered, to do all acts, and things, and deeds which the deceased Sheriff, it alive,

entitled to execute, and, amongst other matters, to com-

plete sales of land and other property, and other proceedings under executions, which may originally have been placed in the hands of the deceased Sheriff, and to execute any deed or deeds, or conveyances of land sold thereunder, for and in the name of the deceased Sheriff, in like manner as if his principal was or had been alive and executed or performed the same, or held the office of Sheriff.

An Act to add to and amend the Act relating to Patents for useful Inventions. [Passed April 19, 1869.]

E it Gnacted by the Administrz’itor of the Government, Council and Assembly, as follows:—-—-

I. Any person or persons who shall, under the provisions of the Act of the Seventh Wil- liam the Fourth, Chapter Twenty-one, intituled “ An Act for granting Patents for useful Inventions,” apply to the Lieutenant Governor, or other Administrator of the Government of this Island, for the time being, for Letters l’a- tent, for any new or useful Art, Machine, Manufacture, or Composition of Matter, or for any new or useful Improvement on any Art, Ma- chine, Manufacture, or Composition of Matter, not before known or used, shall be entitled to all the advantages, rights and privileges, to which any resident applicant, or applicants for Patents, under the provisions of the said recited Act, are entitled, whether such person or per« sons so applying for such Patents, shall or shall. not be resident in this Island ; provided always, that the Colony, Island, or Country, whether foreign or British, to or in which such appli- cant or applicants may belong or reside, do at the same time, accord the same advantages or privileges to the inhabitants of this Island, and do not in like cases in any manner discriminate between the inhabitants of this Island and the inhabitants, residents, or subjects ofsuch Colony, Island or Country.

II. Before any Letters Patent shall be grant- ed under this or the said recited Act, the per- son or persons applying for such Letters Patent, shall pay into the office of the Colonial Secre- tary of this Island, for the time being, a fee or sum of five pounds for such Letters Patent, to
