NORTHWEST DESTROYED BY FLAMES,

TOWNS IN THE

For over a week Northern Wisconsin, a portion of Minnesota and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, have been almost in a sea of flames, according to an Ashland, Wis., despatch of the 20th. The weather has been dry, and in consequence of the large amount of pine cut last winter, the dry brush in clearings makes forest fires the worst ever known in the history of the country. The line of fire in Minnesota ex- tends 50 miles, and includes eight new mining towns, four of which are totally destroyed. The fire in Wisconsin is scattered in patches from Michigan to Minnesota, a distance of 96 miles, over nearly 80,000 square miles of territory.

Many small towns are entirely wiped out, and Ashland and other large cities are threatened,

The situation is worse than it has been since the forest fires of 1873, which de- stroyed Peshtigo and other towns in the Upper Peninsula. The fires have been burning steadily for over six days and are still raging. Nothing but heavy rain caa check them. This evening it is estimaced by well informed lumber men that over 140,000,000 feet of pine have been destroyed.

A regular wall of flame surrounds nearly all the small lumbering towns, and settlers are fighting fismes night and day to save there homes.

Sanborn, 12 miles from Ashland, a village of over 600 people, is entirely destroyed. The residents barely escaped with their lives. Three children named Duncan are missing and are supposed to have perished. The fleeing villagers were dismayed when retreating to Ashland to find the bridge over the canyon at White River gone. Ropes and chains were hastily thrown across, and wemen and children were car- ried across on the perilous swinging bridge. All the stock was left behind to perish. The cries of the beasts battling with the hungry flames were pitecus.

All railroad traffic has been abandoned for four weeks. Bridges and railroads curl like lint under the intense heat. At Mar- engo over 200 settlers reside within a radius of 20 miles which is entirely hemmed in by @ flood of flames. All communication with them has been cut off for three days, and it is feared that many families have perished. The body of an unknown man was brought to Brue to day. He was found in a stream with his pockets filled with stones. He was evidently trying to escape fires and was carried down stream into a sheet of flames teaching ecross the river. His body wa. badly burned about the face and shouiderss

Forest fires have been of common occur- rence in recent years, but usually have been confined to clearings where timber had been cut. The present firesseem to have gained such headway that it is impossible to tell where they will sweep. Acres and acres of great pines, some three feet in diameter, burned like straw.

A pathetic incident connected with the firea is the death of the daughter of John Binnittsen, near Bladder 6. She was teaching a country school in the district. She saw the fires surrounding the school- house, She took the seven children one by one wrapped in her shawl through the seeth- ing flames to the lake, placed them on an old lumber raft, pushed out in the water and remained there over seven hours until help came. She was seriously burned and died this morning. All the children were rescued. At this point so fierce were the flames that the people rushed pell mell to Silver Lake, a short distance from the main street, and threw themselves and their goods into the water. Almost all the women and children of the afflicted towns, nearly 600, have been removed to Duluth, and are being cared for by relief committees.

One of the buildings which was spared by the flames in one of the vil waa ‘*Mike” Keogh’s drinking place and dancing hall. It was one of themostdisreputable of the fron- tier dens, and the place and the proprie- tor have been held in abhorrence by all good people of the town. Keogh, to the amazement of his neighbors, has turned to be a ministering angel, and has converted his capacious house into a haven of refuge His affairs have been suspended and his bouse is filled with the needy and afflicted. His charity and kindly offices are as pro- nounced as was his sinning.

In Merritt, a few miles from Ashland, but 16 houses remain. The loss at Vir- gnia City is inventoried at $1,000,000, with an insurance of $280,000. The loss at Merritt is $300,000, with scarcely any —— About 3,500 people are home-

Within one hour and 25 minutes 345 buildings were destroyed in Virginia City, and the fire had swept a swath 10 blocks wide and 14 blocks long.

To Invade the United States.

Toronto, Ont., June 26.—Another announcement of interest is made by the Dodds Mediciue Company, Ltd., of this city, to the effect that they have decided to establish a factory aud warehouse at Buffslo, N. Y., in order te supply the growing demand for Dodd's Kidney Pills in the United States. This remedy has uever been advertised or placed on sale in the United States, but the popularity of the remedy and the news of its successes in Canada quickly reached the people of the neighboring republic, and orders have poured in, unsvlicited, from every State in the Union, The capacity of the Toronto factory is taxed to supply the Canadian market, and the management feel that they can only do justice to both foreign and home demands by invading the United States and establishing a depot and factory there.

Died at Crapaud, Juné 7th, 1893, after @ lingering illness of some menths, borne without a murmur, Agnes, beloved wife of Mr. John Sherrin, aged 68 years. The deceased was an amiable woman, and loved and respected by all she passed away, leaving her husband and one son, Mr. W. D. Sherrin and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. Bus their loss is her gain. As she lived she died, trusting in her Saviour. The large concourse of people who followed her remains to their last resting place was an evidence of the esteem in which she was held by all classes and creeds.

During the scorching weather of July and August you often rush into an ice cream

This almost immediately gives you a violent pain in the temples or somewhere in the region of the eyes. Why is this? Did you ever stop to think. One who has studied the physivlogy of the case says that it is caused in the fullowing manner: The frozen mixture coming in contact with the nerves of the thruat (the larynx, pharynx, etc.,) tempororily paralyzes them. The sensation instantly shoots to the centre of the nerves, which is in the brain, but finds there a side connection in the shape of the great facial nerve which starts from in front of the ear and extends its branches over the sides of the face.

One branch of this facial nerve, extend- ing across the temple, is a “‘nerve of sensa-

Wellington and Marshal Soult.

Marshal Soult and Wellington met for the first time on the day of Queen Vic- toria’s coronation, and the first conversa- tion they ever had together was in the great hall of Apsley House, where the duke received the marshal on his arriva) there for the banquet given by his grace on that great occasion. Soult’s attention, it was said, was, immediately on his entrance, arrested by Canova’s marble statue of Napoleon, and he expressed his admiration of this fine work of art. On the duke’s remarking that it always struck him the globe represented in the emperor's hand was too small for the size of the figure, Soult replied with ready wit and diplomatic courtesy: “This is because the English possessions are not included.”
