Unfortunately for West. the top club was the most attractive open- ing lead. (Actually. a heart open- ing would have been ideal.) How- ever, as the play proceeded, it did not matter much! East collected two club tricks and led a third round. south ruffed and immed- iately cashed two high trumps. then tried the heart finesse. In view of the bidding. it was not surprising that this failed, and with it. the contract. The right line of play in this type of situation is clearly marked. It involves a slight risk. but far less risk than trusting to the heart finesse! At the third trick deciarer should cash the diamond see. then the diamond king. and should ruff a. third round oi diamonds with a high trump.
