While cautiousnesi appeared 1.0 restrict voliuuc yesterday, the mar- kct had a firm tone throughout the day. Attention was centered largely on the Ohrysler-Lewis-Murphy lab- or conference and the market act- ion indicated that a satisfactory cut/come of this confercLce would bel ikely to ‘produce a vigorous rally in stock prices.

The metal stccks responded mild- ly to a firmer market in London. The Utilities and Rails marked time most of the day. The Steel stocks showed good rallying power that sugg sis they might be lead- ers with t e motor group in any market recovery resulting from termination of the current labor difficulties.

The steel industry at the mom- ent is favored from three important angles. First, 1t is M practical capacity and has a large volume in sight for ‘a considerable period ahead. Second, its major danger of a forced tieup was mini» mized, it not eliminated, by the re- cent concessions to labor and the C. I. O. U. Third, the cost of these concessions was largely compen- sated for by the recent advance in steel prices.

NEW YORK, March 25—The London market this morning is quiet with a firmer tone. A tcn- tativc agreement was reached last night between Walter P. Chryric! and John L. IJewis. Thc agreement provides that sit down strikers will evacuate the plants this moi-n- ing and Chrysler has agreed not to renew production until the strike has been settled. This news will probably help to carry stocks higher today. The rally of the last two days will probably make at iea"t a fifty per cent recovery from the recent high to the rc- cent low and in some cazes even more. We doubt, however, that the market will go into new high ground without at least some sec- ondary selling and unless one wishes to still. try for a turn. we do not believe it advisable to fol- low the market enthusiastically. market leaders, however, will preh- ably do a few dollars better.
