What's going to happen. to-Vincg.

The Amateur Athletic Awards were presented on Thursday evening, April 4, with an excellent crowd in attendance but the atmosphere in the gym was Somewhat different from other years in that many of the students were there, not to honour fellow students for their endeavours over the year, but rather to show their total appreciation . of the work done by Vince Mulligan.

Rumors of Vince's upcoming dismissal were heard for some weeks but the situation fin- ally came to a concrete stand when members of the football, hockey and basket ball var- sity teams as well as par- ticipants in the intramural teams met with the Student Union officials in an attempt to present the Administration of UPEI with the very vehemen- ent feelings with respect to Vince. During these and sub- sequent discussions it became all too apparent that Vince was getting nothing less than a shaft on the whole business. Vince is the only member (and that bars none) of the phys. ed. department who appears to take any interest whatsoever

dent. Intramurally, Vince is the only one who gives a damn and seeing how every student, should he be Joe Football or not, pays $20 in Athletic Fees for a year there seems to be a pretty lopsided emphasis of the staff awa from the 95% of the stu en 3 who aren‘t on varsity teams. This is not

to say that our varsity teams should be left unattended but since Vince manages to do a bang—up coaching job with the varsity hockeyteam plus take care of the Intramural Sports it seems he's proved his worth far beyond reproachment.

But what does he get? Not a renewed contract as he deser- ves, but a dismissal. It seems unfortunate that we may soon lose one of the greatest ass- ets to this university. But,

I am even more assured of the fact that once Vince leaves, he'll be wanted back and we won't be able to get him!

If there was ever any doubt in anyone's mind over the students' feeling towards Vince there could be none af- ter Thursday night. He re- ceived an overwhelming ovation from every student present.

To be as fair as possible to the administration, they were approached, asking for reasons why Vince was being dismissed. Reasons were round about. One of the more popular suggesti- ons was that the budget is suffering. What I would be interested to know is, if Vi- nce is not hired does the mon- oy that would have gone to his salary be used more benee ficially? If someone else is hired to the staff, it can on- ly illustrate stupidity bord- ering on absurdity. If new eq- uipment is purchased what good will it do anyone when there

is no one there to coordinate the students' efforts? As it is, a student is lucky if he can get to use the gym. If he

I would like to express my concern over the alleged re- moval of Vince~Mulligan from the staff of the Athletic Department of the University of Prince Edward Island.

It's hardly logical to re- peat what many students have expressed since I was and am one of those students. What I would like to say has al- ready been said at last week's Athletic Banquet. What I would have done was already done at the Athletic Banquet, (the presenting of a plaque to Vince for the work that he has done for intramurals). Every-student there stood up, applauded and cheered Vince, showing openly how they felt about him, for ten minutes, not two as the guar 1an states.

Gordon Campbell spoke and presented the award to Vince and read a very pertinent Cadre article written on November 16, 1971 by the girls of . Marion Hall. This is what It said: "

Ed. | Dept. who are 'orking with the athletically superior students, but Vince is the one who gathers the lame ducks and trains us in the art of enjoying sports. .

U.P.E.I. is young and

in many ways deficient, _but we think it important to recognize the assets of the University, and it is for this reason that i' we Say, "Thanks, Vince." .and “Thank you, UoPoEoIo for employing at least one Vince Mulligan.”
