‘V for Vendetta’ Movie Review

Fear of terrorism and a constant reminder of a plague that killed almost 100,000 british citizens keeps the people in line and things are rapidly getting out of hand. News reports are censored and even comedians are taken away in the dead of night, never to be seen from again, just for a gag bit that touches a nerve.

Evey meets the protagonist, known only as codename V, when she is attacked by ‘fingermen’, the governments SS-inspired intelligence agents. The story spirals downwards as V saves her and opens her (and the publics) eyes to the truth of their society.

Huge Weaving puts out one of the best performances of the year and that’s with his face concealed by a mask for the entire film. The screenplay was adapted from Moore’s

work by the Watchowski brothers, of Matrix fame. But don’t expect a huge action fest, while it has some action moments and they’re well done, this is a drama of epic proportions.

Many connections could be made to current society, both in North America and abroard, and the movie does a creepy job of making you empathise with what is essentially a terrorist.

Weaving’s ‘V’ may blow up buildings and kill people, but he thinks it’s for the right reasons and attempts to convince Evey to join his cause. What follows is a compelling, well thought out story of revenge, patriotism and government control.

While a little heavy-handed at times, the movie deals with heavy subjects. It mixes the frantic, over the top government side with Weaving’s elegant portrayal of a man betrayed. I would recommend this movie to anyone, and it’s easily one of the best movies I’ve seen in years.

As ‘V’ says: “People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.”

John Cox -Ten Paintings - Ten Year 1996 to 2006

Hopefully April will bring to us the pleasures of spring, but in lieu of nature, another way to tweek our senses is by standing in front of paintings by John Cox. Let the luscious colours of his palette give your senses a distinct wake-up call. His large canvases seem to invite you to step into them so you are somehow inspited to smell the blossoms, hear the nesting birds, and feel the shadows and sunshine on your skin.

John Cox has painted for as long as he can remember. He has been working and exhibiting as a professional artist since 1976. For the last several years he has explored traditional methods, including making his own paint and painting on stretched linen panels. Integrating

His work has been featured in group and solo shows in galleries through-out the Maritimes, in Toronto, Alberta and B.C. His paintings are in numerous private and corporate collections across North America.

The Printmakers Council of PEI is very pleased to host “ John Cox Ten Paintings - Ten Years “ in The Gallery at the Guild at the corner of Richmond and Queen St. in Charlottetown. All ages are welcome come and help us celebrate at the opening reception (refreshments and activities) on April 1st, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. The show will run from April 1st until April 29th, 2006.
