A NARROW ESCAPE.
HOW THE CAMPANA STRUCK’ THE
EMBLETON.
LONDON, July 22.—The Cunard steamer Campania which sunk the barque Emble‘on as elsewhere reported was little injured but hada narrow €s- cape from a serious disaster. The fog had delayed her passage sicne Friday noon and 21 tender went out from Queenstown four miles, as Captain Walker would not take the liner near shore.
At Tuscar Light the fog was becom- ing denser every moment. When the Campania was about 30 miles north east of the light a phantom ship rose suddently without warning directly across her bows. Thirty seconds latter the phantom had become a solid sutil- ing vessel into which the liner crashed her steel forefoot, going through the Embleton like the clean cut of a sword and dividing her just abaft the main- mast. The foreward half sank instantly. The stern swung viciously around and the mast and yards for a moment tore at the Campania. A lump of wreckage came down on her decks. Then the stern of the barquealso dis- appeared and the surface of the seawas littered with splintered timbers, boxes, barrels, the whele upper works and lighter cargo, the deck house and such things. Then there was nothing. From the instant when the phantom came in to view from tne bridge of the Cam- pania untill the last vestige of the ves- sel vanished, some sixty or eighty sec- onds had elapsed. According to the embleton’s survivors to, nearly half an hour before the collision the captain and the first officer were below at breakfast and although the fog whistle of the large steamer could be heard
every minute, the barque never shifted her course the helmsman receiving no orders. When at 8,25 a. m. the second | officer, to use his own phrase. “Heard! the rush of a steamer’s bows,” he shout | eb down to the captain, who rushed on | deck, but he was to late to give an order. The Campania was under one- third steam. The captain first officer and pilot were on the bridge. The engines were instantly, reversed, helm put hard down. was omitted. Some of her passengers had even grabbed at what they cailed superfluous caution. After the crash and the sudden cries the boats were quickly got out. There were no signs of panic. The crew were everywhere at their stations, the best discipline was maintained, the bulkheads were closed and everything possible was done save life. Some of the Campania’s plates were bent by the collision, her forepea filled with water, | er fore top mast was broken short off and her steel rigging torn and twisted.
The passengers held a meeting, adopted resolutions of thanks for he captain and crew and_ subscribed £700 ($3,500) forthe relief of the survivors and the families of the lost. tia

One of the most touching incidents of the war in South Africa occurred this week, when Captain Towse receiv- ed the first Victoria Cross bestowed by the Queen for valor in the veldt, -Cap- tain Towse earned the distinction by attempting to carry off Col. Downman who had been wounded, under a_ hail of bullets. He was unable te do so, and lay beside him and kept off the Boers all night untii help came. By that time Col. Downman was dead. Captain Towse was blinded in both eyes by a bullet wound. On wednesday Captain Towse was taken to Windsor, and led into the Royal presence by his wife, where he knelt at the feet of his Sovereign, who was so much overcome at the sight of the blind hero that her aged hands could scarcely pin on the most prized of all British decorations. The Queen’s few words of simple prais of his gallantry and thanks for his de- votion were spoken so low as to be almost inaudible, and when Queen Victoria was led out there was scarcely a dry eye among the officials present.
WAR ECHOES.
Mr, J. M. A. Wolmarans, of the Transvaal executive °council, was re- cently arrested at his house within the Britishlines near Hatherley. Bri- tish gold worth $30,000, and a quantity of arms were found con cealed in the house.
Published accounts, says the Army and Navy Gazette, show that Lord Airlie, Lieut. Wright, and the non- commissioned officers and men of the 12th Prince of Wales’ Royal lancers, returned as killed in the fighting near Pretoria, lost their livesin a splendid charge. Some guns of the Royal Horse ‘ artillery were found to be in danger, and the regiment received the order to press forward and rescue them. The

A communicatiomfhas been received from the newly formed guild in Cape Down replying to the request of the Daughters of the Empire that the South African ladies should form a coumittee to help the Canadian com mittee to locate the graves of the Can- adian soldiers who have been killed during the war. In reply, it is stated that it will be regarded asa sacred privilege to assist their Canadian sis- ters in this matter. Mr. Mason, who has charge of the Canadian depot in Cape Town, has promised his hearty co-operation. Lord Roberts and the War Office have been approached, and have promised to lend their assistance. Local committees, whose homes are nearest to the battlefields, will be ask- ed to take charge of the graves after they have been railed, and they will act on behalf of the Daughters uf the Empire in the erection of memorial stones and in procuring photographs of the graves of the dead soldiers.
