OBITUARY.

Death of Hugh MeVarish of Souris Line

ward on the 2lstinst; at the age of 79 years. Deceased had been a resident of that lucality for forty-one vears. During his young days he lived at More'] R-av, known as the back farms, until the gold exvitement of 1849 in Australia, when he in company with the late Ronald McDonald, of St Peter’s Lake, left for that far off region, sailing from Charlottetown in the ship Red Jacket. They arrived in England eaf:ly and took passage in anoth«r sailing shipto their port of destination, Melbourne, making this part of the voyage i. one hundred days. After a residence of three years among the Australian golds fields they both returved to their native Island fairly well supplied with the article of which they had been in search. Ronald

settled at St. Peter’s Lake, where he died some years ago, at aripe age. They under- went many trials and hardships in their gold hunting experience. As the mode of travel was not so convenient as at the presentday. Mr. McVarish encceeded in clearing a large farm on the Souris Line Road, which at the time of his death was wellstocked and furnished with all the modern appliances for successful husban- dry.

He leaves family of three sona and two daughters who suryive him and who are alicomfortably provided for. His funeral to St. Mary’s Church, Sonrle, was one of the largest seen in Kings County for many years,

The Rev. D, F. McDonald, of Souris, officiated on the oceafion who also admin-~ istered the rites of his church to him during his illness,

Thus bas passed away another of the landmarks of the good old people who assisted in building up the industries of the Island reclaiming it from the forest, and his work being done has gone to bis reward. May hie soul rest ‘n peace,

Sin In your i68ue of the 23rd, I see a com mutication from some very indignant worthy signing himself “Malpeque,” who not satisfied with inveighing against the project of building anew P. W. C., so far forgets himself as to enter into @ Cons temptible and aleo a most cowardly sland- erous attack upou Dr. Anderson and Prof. Caven who seem to be referred to in bis letter. Against these he launches his most bitter invectivee. Buta cur always barks at his bettere and from a safe place, and these are certainly the tactics of the writer signing himself “Malpeque.” He certainly spoke truly enough in using the word magnificent Dr. Anderson for he is that in truth when compared’ with the like of the writer from Malpeque. He speaks of Dr. Anderron’s salary as heing greater than that which the late Attorney General drew from the office held by him, and why should it not be so; for does the Dr. not g ve value for his pay?

As for turning the Gevernor out of doore that is another question and one perhaps not s0 important as turnipg many of the scholors of the Island away from the chance of furtherirg their education in order to support themselves through life; and to use his ownargument,is not the Goveraor sufficiently well paid to pr vide his own residenceif it comes to the salary question. He renews that worn-out and useless argument about the present P.. W. C. being good enough, tf repaired: Well, it would be, to accomodate all he | might send to it. He says such “bulwarx+” of free education, as Dr. Anderson and Prof. Caven are not required. If it were not for their past efforts, where would be our clever young educationalists that$he epeaks of, to whom is credit due for the first scientific trainilog of Schurman, Mac~ Phail and others that might be mentioned’ Sureiy—as he so urgently requests it— Parliament should be summoned at once, and save bim from “putting hie hand into | his pocket” as he expresses it himeelf,

himself appear in the public eye, I will recall to his mind a very large meeting held in the schoolroom at Marte in Feby. 1896, when the fo'lowing resolution was | submitied :

“Reso'ved thiatit is the opinion of this meeting that the Government fulfil toeir promise by having the money appropriat- ed for the repaire of Dingwell’s wharf expended and in the event of the money

not being expended for this purpose, it is the unaminous Opinion of this that the Government has brokon faith with the

people.

At this meting, Mr. Judson Webster presided and declared the resolution carri- ed without @ dissenting voice. Within one week ata large meeting held at Morell, this resolution was eodorsed. In view of these facts “Old Liberal” and his assist- ants ignore the opinions of the farmers of Morelland Marie and constitute thems selves the cus’odians of the wisdom of the whole community.

Uid Liberal refers to Capt. the Schr. Darling as being driven on the flats of St. Peters Harbor, and condems the cn tructior of awharf there. I wish to inform “Old Liberal” that the Darling was not commanded by Capt. Gallant, dat by Capt. Doucet e His schooner was driven on by a furious s'o-m, Being of over 100 tonsand loaded with Salt she was very deep Inside, the harbor war one seething masa cf foam and the Capt, ran intoo far before dropping anchor, He was a stranger and. not knowing the channel struck a fiait Is this any reason, that a wharf could not be built. Because the Boston beat a shor time ago went on the flats at Rose bank, is thatany reason that Charlotietown Harbor sbou'd be abandoned.

The public will thus see the tran*parent absurdity of the contentions of “Old Libera’.” The chart shows the channel] s et most places over 200 yards wide, anda not serpentine as siated by “Uld Liberal,”

Would a revenue be expecied from a wharf that for the last twenty years has been in a dilapidated condit on; And even if it bad been in re- pair, the government wae not in @ position to collect fees from the fact that since 1884 each government, Federal and Local, has refused to own those wharves that at that time were mot taken over by the Federal Government.

Iam regarded as an extremist by the writer to Tue Examiner, but I have never sunk so low in the slough of political bigotry as to burn in effigy one of Canada’s most illus.rious tore; one who assisted ip @ great measure in making the Dominion what it is to-day, and who is respected by the people and honored by our Queen Old Liberal has always been regarded as a a political Ishmaelite, aud fortunate will the party be who bas him against it, as he is considered the omen of bad luck, the the harbinger of disaster. His influence has no more effect then the sickly rays of a December sun has upon an Alpine glacier. I feel that in this matter the Government will redeem the promise made to the people, and, notwithstanding the threats of “Old Liberal,” the farmers of Morell, Marie and Midgell will, atthe hands of the Covernment, obtain justice.
