The Riel Demonstration Unsuc- cessful.

The demonstration to-day was not as great a success as the promoters hoped, only a tithe of the hundred thousand ex- pected turning out, and these for the greater pars irawn from curiosity,

At Si Patrick’s, in the morning, Father Dowd dulivered an eloquent and impressive grmon, warning Irish Catholics to have nothing to do with the agitation, and com- pending strongly the action of the Govern- ment in carrying out the sentence of Riel.

The speeches were all of the most violent type, breathing denunciations against the Government, the French Ministers pare tigularly, and the English speaking popu lation generally. Morcier, Leader of the Liberais in Quebec, stated he had written

Two Terrible Cyclones. Lonpon, Nov. 23.

A terrible cyclone swept over the Philip- pine Islands, Friday, eight thousand buiid- ings, including numerous caurches and tchoolhouses were destroyed, and twenty- two persons killed.

Despatches to the Times from Calentta, says that tive thousand people have been drowned, and a hundred and fifty villages submerged in Orissa by a cyclone, and that 1241 square miles in Moorshedabad and Huddes districts have been devastated.

J. W. Cudlip Fatally Burned Sr. Joun, N. B., Nov. 23.

J, W. Cadlip, Luspector of Customs, was fatally burned on Saturday evening by bed clothing catching fire from a lamp while he was reading in bed. He died at 3 o'clock on Sunday morning.

Lock Company Arrains.—The claim of Mr. Charles Fawcett egainst the Peters Com- bination | ock Company was adjusted yester- day, the liquidators paying $14,700 Mr Fawcett’s claim was some $3,000 in excess of this amount, arising out of arreara of interest. The original mortgage was $19,000, which with interest for five years brought the total up tothe amourt given. The officers of the new company and the liquidators of the old company will have a meeting on Wednesday next, when it is likely that a final adjustment of the business will be reached,
