|Reiations Between Husband and | Wife.

Mr. Justice Galt, Ottawa, recently de- livered a decision which is of much interest to husbands, wives, tradesmen, and the public genevally. It appears that an Oitawa woman made a purchase of dry goods trom a well known dry goods firm in that city, and ordered them to be charged to her husband’s ac- count. As her husband’s eredit was good no questions were asked and the goods were delivered. In the usual time the bill was presented to the bus- band and payment requested. The gentleman refused payment and repudi- ated any responsibility ia the matter, on the ground that he had forbidden his wife to purchase goods anywhere in his The dry goods men sought by process of law to induce the gentleman to take a different view of the subject, thinking, not without reason, that as no public announcement had been made of his determination to put an end to bis wite’s shopping proclivities, at least so far as his paying for lier purchases was concerned, they had good grounds for action, The case was tried before Mr. Justice Galt, and the husband pro- duced a servant girl as a witness that he had given his wife positive orders to buy no goods at any of the stores on his ac- count, The purchase was wade after this order had been given, aud the plaia- tiffs were non-suited, the court holding ‘that the husband’s liability was thus extinguished, although the order was privately given.

The steamer Cedar Grove, recently built in Eugland for the lately organized New Brunswick Steamship Co., arrived at Halifax last Tuesday from London, with a full cargo of general merchandize for Halifax, St. John and provincial towns. The Cedar Grove is a brig-rigged iron ship of 2,700 gross tons, 1,437 nett, and /was launched — by Messrs. Osborne, Graham & Co., of Hilton-on-Tyne, in August. She draws, when laden, 24

feet of water aft, and 23 forward. She has compound engioess of two hundred horse power, and on her trial trip steam- ed 1)-knots av hour. The Enormous Size of London.

London has a larger population than mauy #« European Suave with a sovereign and a parliament. At thé eeusns of 1881 the area of metropolitan taxation and police contwined 4,764,312 person. Thus there are iu London more than double ihe number of people in Denmark, in- cluding Greenland ; nearly three times as many as in Greece; more than eighteen times the population of Montenegro: some thousands more than Portugal, in- cluding the Azores and Madeira; uearly treble the population of Servia; more than double that of Bulgaria; three- quarters of a million more than io Hols land; more than Sweden or Norway or Switzerland. And yet this splendid capital, the most populous and wealihy city the world has ever seeu is practically without a Government.

Canadian Salmon and Lobsters Abroad.

It appesrs that during the past season several steamers provided with refrigera- tors have left the lower Canadian ports with cargoes of fresh salmou for Mar- seiiles, and it is stated that a cousidera- able quantity has found its way to St, Petersburg through the Paris markets, and the perfection to which the retrig- erating sysiem has been carried has revolutionized the continental salmon business. The exports of tresh salmon haviug~proved successful there is no reasou why fresh lobster shipments should not be equally prosperous. A London exchange, commenting on this subs ject, says that the lobsters cau be brought to Europe without the lo-s of the creamy
