A Second Steamer Promised.

Orrawa, March 15.—A run was made on the order paper in the Houre of Com- mons yesterday.

Mr. Martin was informed thar the gov~ ernment did not propose to assume con- trol of the Breakwater at Belle River, P. E. Island at present.

Mr. Yeo was informed that one lease of an oyster bed had been made at Malpeque in Shemudy creek to Mr. Enmar, Mr. Kemp the inspector having reported that he did not consider ita live bed being in shallow water and liable to be killed by ic and frest. The government do not} propose to allow oyster beds to become depieted. Mr. Kemp’s salary is $1500.

Mr. Martin was informed that the gov- ernment are considering representations

Island and the Mainland. It is contem plated to put on & second winter steamer, but the route has not been decided upon.

Apple growingie admitted by any Canadian grower to be his easiest money earner ; if he can rely on Obtaining for his crop as average net price of $1 per bri, although during season 1896—7 some three million bris. were consigned to our markets from Canada and America, the most honest packers enjoyed returns exceeding $1.50 per bri. for their total exports, Carelers packers, of course suffered. Good frut can always be marketed bere at eatisfac- oy prices. The number of patents issued at Ottawa las: year was 4,013.

It is reported that the Ottawa Bnd Montreal capitalists who some time ago bouded gold ares at Whycocomagh, C. B., which are claimed to be proving immens>- ly rich, will send Mr. Ogilvie, the famous Alaskan explorer, to Cape Breton to report on the miveral fields there. Dr. Gilpin, inspector of Nova Scotia mines, has sent to the Provincia! Government @ report on the result of his recent official trip to Whycocomagh. He says the gold dis- coveries are very valuable, bat does not go into minute details. A tunnel has been driven into a mountain ¢ here rich deposiis exist. At the entrance to this the mines inspector encountered an armed man or guard and had considerable trouble in overcoming his ctjections to the inepector entering. Dr. Gilpin found very rich quartz near the entrance to this tuonel, He also found free gold in sand taken from the bed of the Whycocomagh River.
