CULTIVATION OF THE CRANBERRY
The meeting in the Public Hall at Miscouche on Wednesday evening. to dis- cuss the question of cranberry cultivation was attended by about six hundred _per- sons, and the proceedings throughout were of the most interesting ard instruct- ive character. Gilbert DesRoches, Eeq., presided, and opened the meeting in an appropriate speech.
Mr. Diekie began the proceedings with an eminently practical paper on the culti vation of the cranberry, in the course of which he gave those present the benefit of his experience in this line, and showed how to make the necessary ditches for the draining of the bog. Mr. Dickie obtained some two hundred bushels from his cran- berry meadow last year, and looks forward to a greater yield this season. Besides looking after his own meadow, Mr. Dickie manages a cranberry pla:.tation for a Mr. Joslyn of Philadelphia.

The greatest interest seems to be taken in the cranberry industry in that section of the province, and the meeting of Wed- nesday cannot fail to have a most benefic- ial effect.

Three Children Burned to Death.
PENETANGUISHENE, Ont., March 9.—A fatal fire took place yesterday on the op- posite side of the bay from here,in which three children were burned to death. The father had gone away to work, and the ; mother locked the three children in the house and went off toher mother’s on some errand. It was supposed the chil- dren must have been playing with the stove and so set fire to the house. An In- dian, who was the first to see smoke issu- ing from the house, ran in, and finding the door Jocked, was afraid to brcak it in, and the roof fell in before the door wasopen ed. When the neighbors cane they could hear the children crying, but could not get near them. The youngest one was burp- ed to a crisp, and the other two were bad- ly burned and quite dead.
