The young son of Kit Fox forgot that it is a wise Fox who lies low when an enemy is in sight. In his excite- ment he not only stood up but raised up on his hind feet the better to watch.

For a short way Kit skimmed over the ground so fast that it made the young Coyote look slow. "How silly of him to think he can catch my father,” thought the young Fox. Probably he would have hugged himself for Joy it he could have. which of course he couldn't. His lips were parted in a grin as he watched.

But it was only for n. few min- utes. Then the grin faded and fl. worried look took its place. Could it be that that Coyote was gain- ing? He was! There was no doubt about it now. He wasn't gaining fast but he surely was gaining. It must be that father was getting tired and that hateful Coyote ‘wasn't. Little by little he was drawing nearer to the black tip of a tail ahead of him. That Coyote was really running and he didn't seem to be tiring at all.

Was something dreadful going to happen? It seemed so. The young Fox didn't want to see it. For just an instant he closed his eyes. It was for only an instant but in that instant something had happened and it wasn't anything dreadful. The young Fox felt like rubbing his eyes Just to make sure they were not fooling him. Kit Fox WM rllmﬂn! in a wholly different direction from what he had been running. and. that young Coyote was trying to stop himself so as to turn in the new direction.

Kit Fox wasn't running so hard now and the young Coyote was soon almost at his tall again. ‘This time the young Fox didn't dose his eyes even for an instant. Just as it seemed as if that Coyote was going to leap on Kit Fox the latter, without slowing at all, turned sharply at right angles and the _ Coyote went rushing past at full speed for quits a way before he could slow up enough to turn.
