Thus, as the Montreal Gazette remarks, ‘in fourteen years the savings of the people deposited in the banks and loan companies have increased from less than £100,000,000 to no leas than 2244,400,000, or about $150,000,000. Certainly such figures do not betoken a state of trade, a condition of industry, which frightens eway capital and renders employment un- remunerative The reeord ‘tunds a testi- mony to more than the thrift and frugal- ity of the Canadian people. It is the most tangible evidence that they have experienc- ed substantial prosperity in their various avocations, and that the fruits of their labor have vielded an abundant return. In the case of the Government savings banks, of which there are more than 700 scattered over the Dominion, the increase in deposits is especially significant, be- cause it relates to the laboring classes who place in these institutions the savings they are able to effect from month to month.”

Havirax, Aug. 24. The steamer Dorcas and the barge Etta Stewart are total wrecks ten miles east of
| this harbor. All on board are lost. There
were seventeen in the two crews. There were also others on board, including some
women. The steamer was from Sydney to |
Halifax. Thomas McAdam, of Charlotte- town, was one of the seamen
McKenzie Bowell Not to be Retired.

McKenzie Bowell was asked if it was true, as reported in the Grit papers, that he was to be retired from the cabinet and made Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba. He declared there was no truth in the statement, and that he contemplated no change in his position at present.
A Cunard Official Drowned.
