General strengthening of the bond market, increased overseas demand for Can- adian wlieat, barleyand oats; re- sumption of Canada's cattle exports to Great Britain; increased traffic on Canadian canals; a slowing up in the drop of wholesale and retail pric- es; increased retail seles reported by large departmental and chain stores; slight improvement in the price of mining stocks on Canadian stock exchanges; increases in the produc- tion of concentrated milk, leather, footwear and cheese.

Grain exports during the first four months of the present year are greatly in excess of those of the cor- responding period in 1930. 1n April alone exports of wheat were in excess of the preceding April by more than one million bushels, while barley ex- portsincreased from 16.660 bushels to 755,24‘! bushels and exports of oats increased from 26.153 bushels to 158,382 bushels.

LONDON, May iii-A distinctly pessimistic atmosphere prevailed to- night among delegates to the inter- national wheat conference, which will convene tomorrow with all large wheat exporting countries of the world represented.

The conference, seeking to dispose of surplus wheat and work out a pennancnt and practical scheme to benefit farmers throughout the world, was said to have abandoned any hope of recommending en ex- pert quota. scheme, due to the oppo- sition of Britain. and the refusal of Soviet Russia. to participate in such a. project which might endanger the success of the Russian five year plan.

It was understood that delegates will concentrate their. effort-s on creation of an international market- ing organization, composed of ex- porting countries, and on perfecting machinery ~ for control of future wheat surpluses. 1111c present gigan- tic task fscod by the conference is the disposal of s world-wide surplus estimated at 1,148.000,000 bushels.

The latest figures prepared for tho delegates show that the requirements of importers of cereals for the year ending in August will be about ‘Hi4.- 0ti0,000 bushels, of which 584,000,000 bushels already has been shipped.

Piloting s Curtis-Robin seaplane, Messrs. Douglas Fraser and Herbert Clayton arrived in the city last evening at 6.35 enroute to New- foundland. The airmen left Montreal yesterday. morning at 10.15 in the plane, which is intended for oom- mercial service in Newfoundland. They reached Rimouski after four hours flying. After a two hour's wait for gas and oil the plane hopped off for Charlottetown at 3.45 pm.
