The pigeens who have been carrying messages from Ladysmith to cheir lofts to Durban belong to members of the Durban Racing Pigeon Club. The distance, as the pigeon flies, is 120 miles.

Captain W. B. Lafone, of the Devons, or, “Bloody Eleventh,” as they are called after Salamanca, who was wounded at Elandslaagte, is a son of the member of parliament for Ber- mondsey.

“T think,” writes a Uitlander. “it will give Tommy Atkins a bit of a turn after an action to see the beys who will be among the dead and wounded Boers. Many who look like fourteen, but are said to be sixteen, have been commandeered.”

It has transpired that the reason the complete roster of officers, non com— missoned officers and men of the Canadian regiment for South Africa has not been published, is that in the hurry and excitement of departure from Quebec, after the final roll call took place, two of the captains command- ing companies, pocketed both copies of their companys rosters and have sail- ed for Cape Town with them. The department officials are awaiting return of the missing muster rolls by first mail leaving Cape Town after arrival of the Sardinian.

You must, at the same time, however, evince a lively interest in all that is going on; come what may, have a smiling face. If your men are under a fire to which they are replying, walk about in front of them as they are lying down. I donot mean that you never to avail yourself of cover, fcr when skirmishing it is your duty to do but under the above-mentioned circumstances the best troops are pron? to become unsteady, and it is then the especial duty of the officers to show an example of coolness and steadiness. When wounded, the of- ficers should take a pride in refusing the assistance of the men to take them to the rear, etc.”
