MORNING SESSION.

Avricultural Education.

The Association met at nine o'clock on Friday morning, James Carruthers, Eeq, in the chair.

Mr. Turner’s resolution cslling upon the Provincial Government to appoint & Profersor of Agriculture to Prince of Wales College and also to deliver agri- cultural lectures and addresses throughout the country, was first taken up.

Mr. Jobu Edwards suggested that, in view of the apparent apathy of maov farmers in respect to azricultural educa- tion, the time to obtain a professor had not yet arrived. The cost, too, be said, is a matter to be ccnsidered.

Mr. Stepben Huestis thought it very | desirable that the principles of agriculture should be taught in the putlic schools,

He thought it high time to stir up the youth of the Province to the first-rate importance of agricuiture, and be agreed with Mr. Huestis that the place tobegin is in the echoole. Mr. Stitson quoted the proverb “Train up a child in the way he should go,” etc, and said that in his opinion, this was a golen opportunity for the farmers to ex-

It is acurious fact that while our echool population is smaller tban it was, the costof education is larger asd has lately been growing considerably.

If* ecev” was the d fliculty, we could dizpense wih one of the other Profes-ors in Prince of Wales Col'ege. Let us bave Agriculture instead of Physics or Latin, or Greek. The farmers should unite to de nand the ap~ pointment of an agricul ural profeessor.

The resolution was then put and carried unanimously ; and the following gentlemen were appointed @ committee to press the matter upon the G .vernmeat, viz , Messrs Fred Turner, J. R. Edwards, and James Carruthers.

PROTECTION OF SHEEP.

Ma. Archibald Stitson submitted the

following resolution, which was seconded by Mr. I’red Turner;

Whereas, it is highly desirabl+ that some thing ehould be done with a view of pro- tecting as far as possible, sheep from the ravages of doge, andto m: ke provision for raising a fund to indemnify farmers for losses sustained or damug+s occasioned to their flocks, in certain caser; aod whereas itis believed that the l-vying ofa dog tax would greatly tend to leasen the num-~ ber of dogs and thusto reduce the op- portunities for damage doiog,—

Therefore resolved, thatia the opinion of the members of tnis Association a law should be enaeted by the Legislative As. sembly impoeingatax ot $1.00 upon every dog,to be paid annually, such tax to be levied and co | cted in each schocldise trict,in the eame manner asthe ordinary echool assessment; the amountso col- lected up to $50.00 in the aggregate to form an indemuity fund for losves, etc., sustained, and the surplus over that sum, to beavailable if the school «istrict for ; current school expenses,

Further resolved that petitions to the Legelative Assembly asking tor the enactment of sucha law. at the next session of the Legislature be circulated throughout the Province forthwith.

This resolation was discussed by Messrs Gill, Edwards, Huestis, Turner, Crockett and McInnis, all of whom were agreed that

$500ehould be made up out of the proposed dog taxer; and the balance returned to the respective echoo! districts in proportion to the amount of taxes paid by them.

After some discussion this amendment was moved and adopted,

The vote of thanks pes ed unanimously, avd was suitably acknowledged on bebalf of those concerned by Messrs Humphrey and Rogers.

A Doctor Gives What He Calls Cold Facts About Smoking.

‘I don’t like to upset a cherished tradition,’’ said a doctor who is him- self a devotee of the weed, ‘‘but the talk one bears of nicotine saturating the systems of smokers is mostly rot. Nico- tine is a deadly poison. One drop of it will make a good sized mastiff turn up his toes if injected subcutaneously, and it would take precious little of it to killa man. The truth is that very lit- tle is absorbed, even by the most con- firmed smokers. Now and then you read of men who die from excessive tobacco using and are found on autopsy to be literally reeking with nicotine. All rubbish. Nothing of the kind ever hap- pened.

‘Again, it’s a favorite experiment to blow smoke through a handkerchief, _ud the stain that is produced is popa- larly supposed to be made by nicotine. It is really oil of tobacco, which isa horse of quite a different color. No, the chief barm done by smoking is the stimulus which it gives to the heart. This is particularly true of cigarette smoking, where ‘inhaling’ is nearly al- ways practiced.

‘*Bach time the smoke is inhaled it acts as a slight spur to the heart, and, needless to say, there is sure to be a re- action. If the smoker is in good general health, he wi!: probably never feel it, but if he isn’t there will be periods of profound depression, and, not knowing the cause, he is apt to try to brace up on a drink, which makes matters just that much worse. If he has organic heart trouble—valvular weakness, I mean—it’s quite possible that he will tumble over some day and put bis angel plumage on.
