Mr. Saunders On The Budget

lMr. Saunders resumed the de- bate on the Budget. He criticised the payment of $2000 rent to the late Lieutenant Governor. in the case of the residence of the late Chief Justice Sullivan he said there was an exlpress agreement that rent should be pal-d because Government House was required as u Convalescent Home. But there was no BlWh agreement as to the rent of the residence of the lute illleuleliaiil Governor. That was, he maintained, an improper expenditure. Other improper ex- penditures were made in connec- tion with Prince County Hospital. in respect to a delegation to Otta- wa, the printing oftlle Tax Act. the payment of corouers who had submitted excessive bills and send- ing of Hon. Mr. iMdElwen to the West -indles as a trade delegate be- cause he was not made Minister of lPublic Works. The time has ar- rived ahwhich we should "call a. halt" to such expenditures and practice the most rigid economy. We now have deficits. One l-eaewl is that the poll tsx was taken oil. That tax was. Mr. Saunders con- tended a fair and reasonable tax, and ought not to have been repeal- ed.
