The Rochester Union says: — of the fact that innocent men are tried and convicted of crimes with which they had no. connection come to light oceasionally. A case of this kind of more than ordinary interest came to the know- ledge of a reporter of the Union this morn- ing. In 1882 the Manufacturers’ and Traders’ Bank of Buffalo was made the victim of a fraudulent transaction to the extent of over $2,000. A man giving the name of Watson opened an account at the bank and made a deposit, from which he drew small sums. When the original de- posit was nearly exhausted he placed to his credit a New York draft made by the Bank of Commerce of Cleveland for $3,000. The day after he checked out $2,100. The draft was sent on to New York and was honored without question, but when it eame back to the Bank of Commerce there was trouble. The draft had originally been made out for S17, but had been skilfully raised to $3,000. An investigation resuit- ed in the & SUSpX ~cted party in| Buffalo who, under the name of Watson, was tried, convicted and sentenced Auburn for tive years, which term he is at present serving. He was, itis said, duly identified by the ek officials, and all the evidence was strong as inst him.

Sir,—In the issue of the Herald of the ist inst,. appears a communication from Ronald S. Molbonald, Harbor Master,Grand River, who seems to be anxious to bring himself into public notice by casting re- tlections on the Georgetown pilots. True, the accident to the George Herold was one which might be averted, but if a :istake should be made by one man, it does not necessarily follow that a number of others are to be blamed as weil. and should the intelligent Harbor Master of Grand fiver, as is his duty, desire to avoid further accidents, 1 would suggest that he have the buoys in the proper piaces, es- pecially at this season, when vesse!s are passing iu and out every day and accidents are likely te cecur ; ; and should he req ire any information in the placing of the bueys there are pilots in Georgetown, who can teach him not only to put. the buoys in their proper places, but to pilot a vessel in or out afterwards.
