HALIFAX (CPl—In boatyards along Nova Scotia’s south shore from Hackett’s Cove to La Have, men skilled in the art of laying a keel have gone back to build- ing a type of vessel they thought had gone for good.

Small schooners. from 25 to 43 feet long. are rising on the stocks as Nova Scotia vyachts- . en a d an increasing number of outsiders place orders in what promises to be one of the biggest boat-building booms to hit the province before the Sec- ond World War.

The vessels are modelled after the miniature schooners that formerly did the inshore fishin

w taken over by fiat~ sterncd motor-powered Cape ls- land boats.

About 20 of the older vessels were purchased by yachtsmen and converted to pleasure craft between the end of the war and 1960. Then the supply ran out and builders began receiving orders for new schooners— a type of craft most had not con- sidered for two decades.

The little schooners were fairly common in Nova Scotia waters until the war. They were beneath the notice of most well- heeied yachtsmen although a

[few were sailed on Sundays byl old-timers who wanted to sea-I son their waning years with the! salt of bygone days.

SOME ABANDONED ‘ After the war a few were still 1 fishing, others lay retting onl beaches and some had been} converted to motor boats. MONTREAL (CPI—Sir Chris- topher Chancellor, chairman of the Bowater Corporation of North America Ltd.. announced Tuesday that l-l.M.S. Lewin is retiring as vice-president and director of the company at the end of the year.

He is also retiring from the. presidency Bowater 3 Power Company Ltd. Deert Lake, Mid, and from his other Bowater directorships in Can- ada.
