That there has been a consider- able falling off in tourist business‘ in Canada from the peak year of 192D is not denied. Prince Edward Island, however, has perhaps sui- jfered lea in this respect than any lProvince in Canada.

‘The Chill-ID World's Fair in the past slimmer, has had a detrimen- tal effect 0n the Amerimn ‘lbuxist Trad; .n Canada, but there is every indicaton that the coming season will show g decided improvement over the plst year.

"ls the tourist business worth cultivating, is a question that some unnformed people might ask? The "best evidence that ll- is worth while. is the fact that it has the unani- mous and en usisstic support of every leading awspapc in Canada.

We have on file leadng articles from over 300 newspapers published from Coast to coast in Canada, all oi which are a boost for the tourist trade.

Such a leading authority as Mr. R. H. Coats, head of the Dominion Government Statistical Department has this to say on the subject and Lt is very worth while noting:

"The tourist business in the year 19% reached its highest mark, when it aggregated 830990900. It declin- ed however to $212,000,000 in 1932. I predict that it will be stll lower in 1983. Ninety five per cent of this business is from the United mates and 75 per cent of it is denved from motor car tourists from that country. These figures indicate, not only the value oi this trade to Can- ada, but also the serious loss that would accrue if it were substantial- ly decreased. Flor this reason it is a good time for Canada to lay plans for the development of this profitable traffic."

We have here climatic scenery and attractions unsurpassed in Canada. What we most need is that we should lei. those outside of our Pro- Vince know of them. This can only be done by judicous pirbllcity, which means tdvertis/infl. Advertising, oi course, means the expenditure oi

What then this Amociation mast needs is money to be expended in advert sing, Any good and progres- sive business man understands and appreciates the value of advertising. Applied to the tourist business it would mean doubling and trebiing the number of people who would come to ths Island, and spend their money here instead of in oth- er resorts.

Money left in the Province cir- culates and directly or indirectly everybody gets a share of it.

We again appeal to our su-bacrb- era for the means to carry on the iourist work. Your Directors are devoting their time and QDGTQY to this work without one cent of re- ward. We found it necessary to issue a new folder, as the previous one had been used for two years. This branch of the work has been under the gu dance and direction of s. sub- committee, consisting of Messrs J. M. Murley, J. P. Gordon and Wal- ter Hyndman. This committee mei early in the New Year and planned as consistent a folder, as the lim- ited funds at their disposal would permt. The new folder; was slightly different from those previously is- sued, as more and larger views were contained in it, and less read-

We also found that we had to. have a reprint o! the lithographed» map of the Province, and had 20,000 of these map; printed. We have suflicient on hand to carry us through th.s year. We also had a reprint of the map of the City, which is in great dunand.

The distribution of this literature was through the usual channels in- cludng the Tourist and Informa- tion Bureaus, Transportation Com- panies, Motor League Olllces in Canada and the United States. EX- cellent co-operation has always been given by the two Canadian Railway Companies, and different siealmshp lines. With every inquiry received at the ofilce. a copy oi the folder and map is always en- closed, together with a personal letter.

The folders and maps were also given distribution at the border at St. Stephen and in Yarmouth, N5.

Owing to the limited funds at our dsposal, our newspalper adver- tising had to be confined to Can- adian Publications only. Advertise- ments were published 1n the follow- ing Cities: Halfax, Toronto and Montreal. Each year sees a very marked increase in the number of Ontario and Quebec people visit- ing our Province, and many tourn- pllsnentary renrarka are heard re- p-rdng Prince Edward Island as a holiday resort.

Our Publicity Committee nrc en- couraged to feel that they have justified the expenditure cf their small appropriation .n the adver- tising , that. has been carried on in selling our scenic and climatic attractons. In order for our Province to maintain its share of Tourist travel, it is positively necosary for an actve campacgn of publicity and advertising to be con- tlnued.

Many new ideas are being added to the already numerous attrac- tions located on the Mainland, and make it increasngly dimcult to induce the tourist to make a fln- ancial expenditure to reach and re- turn from our Island. The Gcowa- phlcal location of our Province makes it important that every ef- fort be made to create a des re to cross the Btrait. and to that end every effort is being made to in- duce the authorities to reduce the fare for the transportation of pas- sengor motor cars on the Perry. i

Our Province,

and scenic standpo nt, is without a poor. There is one point or thought our citizens, and that is, it only requires persistent and judcious advertising to keep on continually increasing the number of people who will come here to spend their annual holiday. Incidentally, they will leave many hundreds of new dollars in our Province. The Purness Bed Cross I. llf‘. made weekly, trips to this Province, and also the Clark Steamship Company‘: boat made fortnightly trips to Clhsrlottolown and Summer-Bid!- Liiorature and maps are placed on thee boats each trip. A great many passengers over. and thcae who are making the round twp. usually call at the ofhoe, seeking in- formation and mums up some arti- cles of handicraft, etc.
