the shooting of two police—

men by a strung-out hooker who seems ;to have a passion for»violence. This inci- dent occurs the day' the \ newly appointed police captain (Edward Asner) arrives. The new captain is intent on cleaning

up the neighbourhood and

the precinct - 'by the book' .-

He manages, however, only to make matters worse by beginning an all-out

hunt for the cop killer, turning the neighbourhood

The Irish cop, Murphy (Paul Newman), as well as

contending with the new captain's inept methods has to deal with the fact

is shooting smack, and he has witnessed an innocent bystander being thrown off a rooftop by another cop. Should he tell and become a stoolie? Will he quit the force?

Newman, on the side of the law for once, but still his own man, is enjoyable. His younger partner (Ken Wahl)

I is an added attraction and

the two have some comical scenes together. Asner,

for all he contributes to the movie, is questionable as a headliner. Fort Apache has something for everyone - violence, love, conflict, and comedy, (notably, Newman disarming a knife wielding 'wildeyed' lunatic).

"Fort Apache, The Bronx"

is at titres painfully real— istic, but nonetheless entertaining.
