Claxton In Reply To Opposition Claims In Lengthy Defence Debate

OTTAWA, April 8- (CP)-De- fence Minister Claxton admitted today that the early high hopes for unusually swift production of an all-Canada Jet fighter and en- gine have been dashed.

He added. however. that both the CF-100 Canuck fighter and the Orenda engine should be in regular use by the R. C. A. F. within a time any country would consider normal for production of such new equipment.

He also told the Commons the Orenda engine should be mated with Canada's second fighter. the F-86!) Sabre, by 1953. a union that should allow the U. S.-dc- slgncd Sabre to crack its own world speed record. .

Mr. Ciaxton made a point-by point reply to Opposition state- ments in a prolonged defence de- bate after Maj. E. D. Fulton (PC- Kamloops) contended that Can- ada's defence position is "desper- ate" when the billions of dollars spent are compared with what Canada has to show for them.

Maj. Fulton accused Mr. Cinx- ton of "outrageous and pervert- ed" thinking in the laiter's re- cent statement that a tribe of hindsight critics is hcginning to smerge and said the Minister seeks to hide glaring deficiencies behind security cloaks.
