53 Canadians Enter Toronto Fight Contest

TORONTO, Jan. to-Somethina like five tons of Canadian flesh is palpitating at this moment across the country. It is eager to put on boxing gloves and do mayhem to Joe Louis. the brown boy whose bombing gave Jack Dempsey the idea it was time to iuioarth a "white hope."

Dempsey is scouring the contin- ent for this white puncher and his Canadian agents. Playfair Brown and Tommy McClure. are working the Canadian territory for the old Manassan. The winner of a. one- night elimination collision to be staged here February 19 will col- lect $500 and the right to mingle with other white hopes in the Dempsey finals at New York. De- feat sent the Amerks to the cellar as Montreal Canadlens gained sole possession of the third place rung by turning back the second place Toronto Maple Leafs.

Some 10.000 fans saw the New Yorkers take the lead at the half way mark of the first period when Nels Stewart scored on Art Chap- man's pass while Moi-cons were short two penalized men. Bob Gracie knotted the count less than iour minutes later with the aid of Allen Shields.

The second period was dull and scoreless but action came in the first two mixiutes of the final ses- sion when Joe Jerwsts bullet-like shot from the left boards put the Americans in the van. The lead held until less than four minutes from the end when Hooley Smith tapped in a pass from Earl Robin- son. The winning goal came from the stick of Russell Blinco on pass- es from Robinson and Dave Trot- tier.

Outside of the second period the game was fairly fast and strenuous but only seven penalties were called the Maroons getting five.
