The Pope has despatched Iwo epecial agents to convey instructions to the French electors, enjoining them to frankly accept the republic and to oppose monarchical aspirations in the approaching elections. Mrs Anna S. Gould is goingto Alaska as the chaperone of about sixty widows and bachelor maidens. Mr. Van Wyck. the newlv-elected Mayor of Greater New York, has filed a statement of bis election expenses, and the grand total is $!52.75. If this results in remov- ing the farce of election expenses returns from the boards it will not have been in vain.

It transpires that Laurier’s visit to Washington was the outcome of the personal invitation of General J. W. Foster, ex-secretary of state for :he United States,~who is understood to be acting at McKinley’s instigation. At Luchow, in Germany, 129 fathers have been fined one mark a piece for al- lowing their children under ten years of age to dance ac the harvest festive] of a village near by. An express driver in Chicago, who was locked up overnight for driving his horse and delivery wagon in a funeral procession against the protestations of the mourners, pleaded in the morving that his horse once belonged to an undertaker, avd he could not overcome in the brute the influence of old associations. He was discharged without fine.

The quarrel resulted in the su-pension of the official on full pay. In that happy position he has continued until now, when perhaps an opportusity has occurred to provide a place for the office seeker with - out turning Mr. McDonald adrift.

Hien Tipes at Point pu Cuexe~ Tle tides at Point du Chere, on Wednrsday and Thursday, were higher than they nave been for years, The extension from the station proper to the end of the pier, where the steamers arrive, was submerged by waerand the tracks were considerably disarranged as a result. The track is also considerably undermined aod ‘a gang of men and teams are engaged at work repair- ing the damage done.
IsLaxper Marriev.—A very interesting event took place at the residence of Mr. Chesley Steeve, Lower Covedale, Nov. 19th, when his danghter Hattie wae united in marriage to Mr. Edward Matthews of P. Ki. Isla.d. The ceremony was perform ed by the Rev. Mr. Allan of Hilisboro, after which about 60 guests sat down to a@ sumptuous repast. The bride looked charming in brown poplin, trimmed with pearl and silk, and carried @ lovely bouquet of chrysanthemums. The presents were both costly and numerous. The guests indulged in games and dancing until the wee smal! hours.—Moncton Times.
A Hauirat Ixcipent.—The Halifax Recorder says: A peculiar scene was witnessed iu « north end bar room early Saturday evening. It appears that a man after leaving work and whi.e on his way home with his wages called in at a saloon which he frequentiy patronized and called for a pint of beer. While he was drinking it & woman walked in and after touching him on the arm raid, “Well are you going to give me a glass.also?” The man looked as if he had lost “his sexses. The woman, who was his wife asked him why he did not answer? Still no reply. The woman then remarked that they had hard enough time to live without him throwing away his money on beer. The husband did sot make any reply, and with his head down left with bis. wife.
Potice Cocrt.—Tnie foreoon, the case of William E. Barron, charged with wilful and corrupt perjury, was first on the docket. Barron was notin court when bis name was called, however, and the Magis- trate made the nenal endorsement op the recognizance entered upon by him and his suretie and ordered it to be forwarded to the proper officers for collection.
James Whelan, Barron’s bartender, was arraigned ona charge of drunkenness. He was cosvicted and a fine of $5 or 30 days wes im pored. .
Chas. Watling was fined $5 or 30 dave for a breach of the Liquor Kegulation Ac", upon hisown confession. The offence charged was that his] blinds were kept io euch a way as to obstruct the view of the interior.
