Another Hitch in the Transfer of the Drummond Railway.

Blair Has “Other Fish to Fry.”

Mostreat, Dec. 31.—Another delay has taken place in connection with the exten-~ sion of the Intercolonial Railway over the Drammond County Railway into Montreal. Some months ago it was said that the Drummond Railway could not be got; ready in time to permit trains being ran into Montreal! before January first. It now certain that it will be some time after that before service will be commenced.

Various reasons are advanced for the delxy. A statement was circulated at first to the effect that there was some difficalty about bridges on the Drummond County road not coming up to the standard requir- ed by the Government bridge inspector. Now it is stated, however, that there is another and more serious reason for the hitch. It isthat Hon. Mr. Blair has suddenly discovered tha* he wants to make the Canada Eastern Railway and the Gib- eon road in New Brunswick part of the Intercolonial; and while he has no olyection to the Drummond County road, he wants the supporters of that company to pledge themselves to put the Canada Kartern deal through at the same. This bas caused no little excitement among the promoters of the Drummond County deal, ae th: y do not

wish the success of their business joopardized by any such conflicting pro- position.

Mr. Blair, it is stated, figures that with- out the support of the Quebec members he could not accomplish his object and now he wants the two arrangemeute put through parlisment together.

Loxpox, Dec. 31.—A news agency an- nounces thatthe British naval reserves will be mobilized. According to recent estimates the reserve forces of the British nayy number about 28,000 men. Of this number it is caiculated that at least 10,~ 000 men would be required in case of war te complete the manning cf the war-ships of Great Britain.

New York, Dec. 28.—John Bergan, ‘a German, handsome, poor and unhappy ja his love declarations, accosted policeman Fox last night with the remark: “Here Mr. Cop, take this body to the morgue.” Bergan was standing on the steps of bis home, 542 Third avenue, and his words4o the officer were scarcely uvderstood by the latter before the man discharged a revolv- er into his mouth and fell dead. During the day, Bergan made his will, bequeath- ing his body to a medical college. It does not appear that the suicide was dement- ed.

Lonpen, Dee. 30.—A despatch to the Daily Mail from Singapore confirms the report of the seizure of Hai Nan island by the French. Hai Nan island ie off the south coast of China, and separates the Gulf of Tonquin from the China Sea. It baw an estimated area of 12,000 miles, and a population of 1,000,000 Chinese, exclusive of wild tribes in the interior. Some of the mountains in the centre rise ebove the snow line. It has several large rivers. The coasts are generally rocky; but the west cost is low,and the south coast has some good harbors. Timber is a principal product. This w sent to Annam, Siam and Singspore. The other experts are rice, sugar, wax, pearls, salt and a little gold and silver. Its capital ie Kiong Choo, & populous city on its porth coast.
