Art in New York.

‘New York is becoming one of the greatest art centres in the world,” said a dealer in fine pictures to a Mail and Express reporter recently. “Surely $10,000,000 and probably more are in- vested in the pictures which hang on the walle of private galleries in this city. The majority of these pictures are, however, the production of foreign artists, although there is quite a large number from the studios of American artists. During the past few years there has been a marked and rapid advance in the knowledge and appre- ciation of art inthis country. Thisis in the main due to the frequency with which Americans make European tours and visit the foreign studios and gal- leries. Americans have thus been en- abled to study the works of the old masters as well as the modern school. The result has been that they purchase more ioteliigently and discriminately. The pictures ia eighteen private gzl- leriegin this city are actually worth $6,000,000.”

Shot By The Girl's Father.

The remarkable elopement of Miss Carrie Russell, of St. Mary’s, West Va., aged eleven years, with Luke Leaper, aged fiftytwo, on Monday week, and which has been the one theme of conversation since, had its legitimate result Sunday night, in the shooting of Leaper by Mr. Samuel Rassell, the father of the girl. Lea&per returned to the city alone Sunday morning, and learning that Russell was looking for him, succeeded in keeping out of his way until about eight o’clock. At that hour he and Russell met, when the latter drew a revolver and fired four shots, one taking effect in Leaper’s breast. Russell was at once hurried out of the way by friends, and has evaded arrest up to this time. The sympathies of the community are en- tirely with him. The whereabouts of the girl is unknown.

Temperance in Paris.

Attempts have been made several times to tound a temperance society in Paris, but without success. The Paris- ian cannot be induced to give up his wioe. Light wines are cheap in Paris, and, what is more—and worse—are considered essential luxuries of diet, owing to the bad quality of the water, which is, indeed, undrinkabie in some parts of the town. The drinking habits of the people are growing, for witbin the past few years the cousumption of alcoholic liquor per head has been doubled. The latest attempt to start a teetotal society is that made by the Society de la Croix Bleue. A _ branch of the society was established in Paris a year ago, and, notwithstanding the vigilance of the pioneer reformers, they have only succeeded in captivating about fifty persons.

The First Catholic.

Mr. Charles Raa _ 2. oe Hackney and former M. P,, Yor Danalk is the first Roman Catholic who has oc- cupied tie office of Attorney-General of England, since the reformation. He is an Irishman, born in Newry, in 1833, and was educated in Trinity College. The first Roman Catholic Judge, since the Reformation, was the late Judge Shea, also an [rishman, from Kilkeany. Sir James Matthew of the Chancery Judiciary is now a Roman Catholic and of a Tipperary family. The Marquis of Ripon, now first Lord of he Admiralty, was the first Romano Catholic since the Reformation, ad- mitted to the Cabinet.
