Buster Bear had been taking a nap on an upper slope of the Great Mountain. He awob with a feel- ing of uneasiness lt was an un- comfortable feeling. Flor the past few days he had felt more or less uneasy, but nothing like the un- easiness that possessed him now. Something was wrong, but what it was he didn't kuovw. It was just a feeling. The weather was hot and dry and had been for days and days. It made Buster Bear molt uncomfortable. A black fur coat in hot weather doesn't. make for comfort or good nature. Buster had been and still was very much out of sorts.
"I don't like this weather" he whined. “It is too hot to move about, and it is too hot to sleep." lie lifted his head and wrinkled his nose as he sniffed the air, Then he hastily scrambled to his feet and stood up on his hind legs and took a long sniff. The inside of his nose and his throat stung and smarted. He coughed, Am anxious frightened look came into his rather small eyes, He knew what ITIEGG his nose and throat smairt. It was smoke. Yes, sir, that is what it was. He had prowled around camp fires enough to know smoke when he smelled it, and that where there is smoke there is fire. the Red Terror of the rwoodland folk.
Above the trees he saw a. small thick cloud of dirty white. It wasn't a very big clorud yet, but even as he looked it grew in size. This was from no camp fire. It was" too big u. cloud for that. Buster's uneasiness grow as he watched, trying to make up his mind what to do. He must get alway from there. but where, should he go? In which direction should he go? Where would he be safe?
He saw the Red Terror run up a small pine tree and leap to an. other. That was enough. He turned and plunged d0wn the slope of the Great Mountain, Them l5 tic-thing slow about Buster Bear when he is in a hurry and he was in a hurry now. Ygs, sir, he was in a hurry now. Never had he been in so izreat a hurry. He heard be- hind him the crash of a falling tree and the roar and snapping of the Red Terror. He didn't slow dawn to pick his way a-mong the trees. .
Circling Irish overhead King Eagle looked down, watching Bus-' ter Bear's headlong race 1mm the Red Terror. He humped into trees and leaped over logs and crashed through brush, Behind him the Red Terror raced after him, It seemed to be gaining,

King Eagle was mistaken. Buster Bear ltilfiw just where he was going if he could but keep ahead of the fire. Both were hound for the same place. when t-hey had started to run their only thought had been to get away from the fire; to just run away from it. But as they ran and found they could not outrun the Red Terror they had remem- bered the ponds ni Paddy the Beaver, Water would stop the Rod Terror. How did they know that- Who shall say? We know some things without knowing how we know. It is Old Mother Nature's way. It is what is called instinctive knowledge, It comes rrcm within instead c-f from outside. Never he- fave had Buster Bear and Flat- horns the Moose had to run from fire, but now ns they ran they knew just where in 110.
