Ir is rumored that owing to certain legiela'ion of the Farquharson Govern- ment, the licensed liquor sellers in Charlottetown are legally entitled to keep their placea of business open as follows, viz: From eight o’clock on Monday morn- ing until Tueeday evening at seven o'clock ; then close until eight o’clock Wednesday moraing when they may open aod aell without interruption until seven pour vn Friday evening; at this hour they must again close until Saturday { morning at eight o'clock ; open then and remain open uatil six o’clock on that day, when they should close until Monday morning ateight o’clock.

If the rumor that is current ou the streets be well foundedSit shows ‘an ex- traordinary concession on the part of the Farquharson Government to the liquor dealere,and an explanation must be de- manded and given.

Under the Liquor Regulation Act of 1892,a]] places where liquor was sold were required to be closed at ten o’cluck every night except Saturday, when they should shut at seven p.m. But it is now said, with what truth we have been une able to verify, that when the Farquharson Government adopted the Licenee Svstem the law was changed, as above described, enabling the liquor dealers to. keep open al! night on Mondays, Wednesdave and Thursdays.

May the public, especially the temper - | ance section, and tbe Alliance, ask for an explanation of this extraordinary legisla- tion ?

Tae Patriot is apparently badly rattled over the alleged prohibitory law passed by the Pineau-Farqubarson-Club Adminis tration. In its issue of last evening, in the biggest and blackest type at ite com- mand, the statement is made that the Methodists in Conference at Monctoa ex- pressed themselves as “delighted with our Prohibitory law” when there is nothing whatever in the report over which the heading is placed to justify such an aeser- tion. Again, as far back as June 9th the Patriot proclaimed,in equally large letters, that “Prohibition is now the law of this Province,” when everyone knows that the measure—maimed ag it is—does not go

METHODIST CONFERENCE.

At Monday’s eession of the conference at Moncton the report of the committee on Sabbath observance was submitted and adopted without diecuesion. It urges the better observance of the day’ suggests that each minister be requested to preach some time during the conferential year at least one sermon on the subject of Sabbath obeervance.

The secretary-treasurer of the St, James’ Church relief fund reported that the conference had contributed $1900 to the fund.

The report of the committee on the state of church work expressed pleasure with the response to the appeal “for funds ; aleolthetspiritual progress:shown infthejEp- worth Leaguse,ingSflourish Sunday schools and attendance on public worship; but regretted the small decrease in church

membership. The! committee discoun- tenaocei ihe use of s2nsational methods to secure revivals.

Some objection was taken to the latter statement, and also toan intimation in the report that there was some neglect in baptising invalids and children. The re- port was referred back to com oittee for amendment.

The report of the Union Church relief fund showed $103 39 as receipts, of which the Charlottetowa district coutriduted $16.77 and the Summerside district $8.48.

The report cf the temperance committee was again ditcussed, along the same lines as Saturday, as to whether it was best to accept provincial probibition or continue to press forthe larger measure for the whole Dowiuion,

Ex Mavor Dewsoa, of Charlotttetown, saidjhe was compelled to votefagainst the reso.ution congratulating P E Island upon the prohibitory meesure passed hy the governmentof that Island. It had some good features, but on the whoie the law was not such asto meet the views of the prohibitionists,

Dr. Allison moved in amendment to the Clau-e uuder discussion, that the confer- ence will await with great interest the p actica] outcome of the probibitory legis- lation recently adopted by the Legislature of P.E leland, and expressed the hope (bat the legislation will be found to be ef- fectiveand salutary in the scope of its operetion. ‘The amendment was almost Cairied unanimously.

About 2,4000 pounds of milk were received ou Monday morning Out of which 35 cheese were manufactured; and 600 pounds was also re- ceived which could not be handled and consequently was left over for the follow- ing day. A meeting of the sharebolders and patrons will be held this week to consider the advisability of building an annex to the tactory. The cold storage apartment, which is tbe largest and best of, any cheese factory on the Island, is found to be of great value during the warm weather,

Impressive Celebration at Alberton — Bishop McDonald Present.

His Lordsbip Bishop McDonald, sur- rounded by a numerous Clergy, celebrated the Feast of the Sacred Heart at Alberton on Friday ia the midst of elaborate deco- rations, impressive ceremonies ard general rejoicings, The church of the parish is dedicated to the Sacred Heert and it was moet beautifully trapped out in streamers ecclesiestical colors, greenings, lights The altar was one mass of palms and white aud pink Iiles and many-colored lights. The spacious gr curds were gaily decorated wiih bunting and Chinese lanterne. The illumination { On the vigil was pretty a¢ a fairy scene. The seryices in the moruing concluded with & solemo High Mase of which Rev. Dr. Monaghan was Crlebraut and Key, Fathers Chaissou and Gallant the deacone,he Rev. Dr. Murphywas Marter of Ceremonies, ‘ His Lordship in cape and mitre assisted at the throne. There was a general re- ception of the racrawents of Penance and Eucharisi, the devoticn of the people calling forth the highest praise of the Bishop, who, introduced by the pastor just beforesolemn High Mas , preached an eliquent discourse Ov the Sacred Heart. There was Benediction immediately afier mars and a procesgion when the ‘iiavies were chanted. The Acts of Consecration were read by the Rev. Father Burke.
