millions residing to the South of us. that we have here an unexcelled summer climate, that we have pas- toral and marine scenery unsur- passed elsewhere, that we have hundreds of miles of beaches where sea. bathing can be enjoyed and where one can loll and rest and for a time be free after cares and wor- ries of business, and e assured of sound rest at night, unoppressed by the stifling heat of the city.

We are here well prepared to re- celve and entertain hundreds of visitors. We have a well equipped tourist office where the enquirer is assured of prompt and courteous attention. We have numerous sum- mer hotels, bungalow propositions, comfortable fann homes, in all of which the tourist finds good food, restful beds, and easy access to sea bathing, trout and deep sea fish- ing, and that hospitality for which Prince Edward Island is noted. with reduced rates on the cai- ferry and the prospect of a paved road from Borden, the iecessity arises for more money with which to advertise our splendid attrac- tions. This must be supplied partly by anvincrease of the Provincial Government grant, and partly by more generous donations by busi- ness firms. With the recently organized Tourist Bureau at Ottawa which the Canadian Association of Tour- ist and Convention Bureaux has been urging for the past few years, we may look to increased activity in the number of Americans who will come to Canada. But they will not come to us unless we make known to them, through the med- ium of advertising, what we have to offer them in the way of entertain- ment.

Tourist Trade Imports-Ill

The Prince Edward Island Tour-- ist Association must be placed in position of doing effective work. It must have greater co-operatlon from the Provincial Government and from the business interest of this Province, if it is to render the service expected.

The Tourist business is one of Canada's greatest assets. Other Provinces are expending thousands to the promotion of this business where we can only spend hundreds, and they are getting 800d results from such expenditure.

We cannot expect to keep in line and receive our share of this valu- bale business unless we expend more money in its promotion. The summer hotels also owe s. duty themselves. It is a. fine thing to have a well appointed hotel, to sup- ply comfortable beds, good food and courteous service. This is not suf- ficient. These hotels must let pros- pective visitors know what they hrive to offer, and this can only be done by judicious advertising.

Summer Attractions Of Island Province Unsurpassed In Any Country.

Nearly four hundred years after Cartier landed on Prince Edward Island and described it as “the most beautiful (land) it is possible to see, with lovely trees and meadows", another world- famous adventurer, General Balbo, with his Italian Air Armada. flew over the Island en route to the Chicago World Fair and commended the view of its surpassing beauty as one of the most memorable experiences of his trans-Atlantic flight.

The summer climate, the scenery, the very atmosphere of the "Gar- den of the Gulf," have a drawing and compelling power upon Sllmmsl.‘ visitors. Motorists especially find a keen delight in exploring the high- ways and by-ways, past well kept and carefully laid out farms, paus- ing at brook or river bank to lunch in the open and bask in the shade of a friendly grove.

Famed in Fiction

Cavendish, the home of “Anne 0f Green Gables" and other of Lucy Maude Montgomery's popular char- acters, has an exceptionally fine beach, with sand dunes and surf where one may enjoy to the fulfest the pleasures of the "North Side."

Near Eldon, twenty-five miles from Charlottetown, a band of Highlanders from Scotland landed in 1803 under the patronage of Lord Selkirk, and the spot is sult- abiy marked by a monument. The descendants of these hardy High- landers populate this district today.

Mount, Carmel, fourteen miles west of Summerside, is a thriving Aczid- Ian village, noted for the home handicraft produced there. such as spinning and weaving. and tho making of fine mats.

Soiiris by the sea is another not- ed summer recreation spct, This thriving little town is noted also as the centre cf a very large and thriving fishing area.

Other Centres

The soil below the shelly layer also showed fire action. The accumulation of vege- table would above the layer of shells was in some places ten inches deep, and the average thickness of the stratum of shells was about six inches. thinning out at each end. In the Robinson's Island shell heap Mr. Fewkes found a similar ivory point to that described by Dr. Patterson from Merigomish, which would seem people who frequented the place were also accustomed to hunt the walrus in much the same way as the Esquimaux. The spear point in question had a hole at one end. to which a bladder was attached when used. When it penetrated the wal- rus the spear point was detached from the shaft, The locality where Dr. Patterson found his ivory spear is Just across the strait which sep- arates Prince Edward Island from Nova Scotia.

A solitary fragment of copper is mentioned by Mr. Fewkes as having been found in the Rustico shell heap, in the form of a bead not un- like those which have been record- ed from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The nearest locality from which copper implements have been recorded is the island of Merigo- mish, from which Dr. Patterson dug up fragments of pottery, bone and stone implements, and copper knives. These objects were placed in the museum of Dalhousie Uni- versity, Halifax.

Reference is made to eighteen Specimens of copper in the Provin- cial Museum at Halifax, which were collected at Bachmaiurs Beach, Lunenburg, Nova. Scotia. The" con- sist of nuggets of copper, some of which are hammered. well-made knife blades and pointed imple. ments. Evidently this copper l5 the native ore found in Nova, Scotia and fashioned into rude imple- ments by hammering in much {he same way as the copper imple- ments of the Ohio mounds. Each district is governed in school matters by three trustees. one of whom is elected annually. The district must provide the build- ing and equipment and supplement the teacher's salary by i" 1635i a minimum amount as provided by the Public School Act, accordlns 1° the class of license held by ihfl teacher, the balance of the said?!‘ being provided from provincial rcvcnuos.

The Province maintains for Yhe training of its teachers the Prince of’ Wales College and Normal School. Academic training is given in this institution up to two years of University work, while the Nor- mal School provides training along professional lines.

the institution for one year but have not attained the minimum re- quirements for second class.

Tile local supply of teachers has generally been sufficient, although the salaries have at all times been comparatively low. At the present time the supply is greatly in excess of requirement and the raising of the standard of qualification is under consideration.

Courses of Study

In each school district the work may be carried Oll by one or more teachers according to the number of pupils. but even in the one-room school the course of study extends

Its erec- tion made possible the addition of a fourth year students’ course, thus bringing the institution up to stan- dard Junior College requirements. About 600 students from all D31“ of the Province were in fliwlldfinci‘ at the College last year.

Two years ago the public school at Summerside was equipped and staffed to carry on the work of Senior High School to the cud of Grade XII., when its sfiinciits P15 directly to the University.

In addition to the common Dub- llc school system we have St. Dun- stans University. a Roma-Y‘ chum‘ llc institution of high educational standing. Students are in residence from all parts of thc Province and from neighboring provinces. As Prince Edward Island is an agricultural Province, every effort is made to encourage the study of agriculture both in the schools and college. In the elementary grades nature study is an important part of the curriculum and develops info agriculture in the higher grades.

Assistance to Schools

Through the assistance of the Department of Agriculture, school fairs and various stock clubs have been organized in all rural com- munities.

An active interest in provement of school silrroundings and school furnishings has been created by the formation some years ago of Women's Institutes, of which there are now about 260 branches in the Province, and which are subsidized by the De- partment of Agriculture.

The health education of the pu- pils is carefully supervised by the provincial Department of I-lcalfh, with which havc been merged the i activities of the Canadian Rcd > Cross Society. The nurses supplied . by the latter organization, working r in conjunction with the Women's a Institutes, have done vcry much towards improving the hygienic conditions of the public schools
