LITTLE JOE GETS EVEN Getting even may not pay, I put tisfactlou lies that way. . -Little Joe Otter. l.ittle Joe Otter was far up in the Green Forest where a small brook coming down from the Great Mountain became a big brook. Lit- tic Joe had found a trap. one 0! those traps with wicked steel jaws. llc had known at once that it had liecn set to catch him. He had known, because it had been set at a place where no one but an Otter would be likely to step in it. Little Joe l'lt)WS all about traps. He is smart that way. He is almost as smart they way as his big cousin. (Hutton the Wolverine. who lives where the Green Forest is deepest and tinckcst.

Little Joe knew that if there was one trap there would be more traps. They would be here and there, cunningiy hidden, all the way down the brook to the Big River. it we" not yet daylight. Lit- tle Joe was waiting for someone. Can you guess who it was? It was the trapper, the Man who had set those traps. Little Joe knew that ho would be likely to visit those traps to see if he had caught any- one, Sure enough. just after day- lit.-ht the trapper appeared.

Little Joe Otter kept out of sight. But at the same time he kept the trapper in sight. lie saw the trap- per visit his first trap and thus found out just where that trap was set. The trapper went on and Lit- tir- Joe followed. but all the time he was careful to keep out of sight. Some of the traps: were set for Oticr and some were set for other folks. Some had tempting bait near tht-m. so placed that whoever

But he was doing more than just getting even. he was saving the lives of some of his friends and neighbors. some who didn't know about those traps and i.hat trapper. By pulling those traps out where they could be seen and making them harmless by spring- ing them, he was warning all who came that way.

There was just one person who knew what Little Joe was doing. It was Croaker the Raven. Croaker wasn't altogether pleased. Croaker was having hard work to find enough food. Like his smaller cous- in. Blacky the Crow. Croaker has to work hard for food enough to keep him alive in cold weather. He wasn't pleased with what Lit- tle Joe Otter was doing because he had known about that trapper. He had known that if some of the smaller folk should happen to be caught in any of those traps they probably would be killed. And if they were. he would get them be-

Difficult bridge hands have a way of becoming classics. That is, they are discussed at great length; the story about them circulates from club to club; and it is not remarkable for travelers to take them to other cities. for the baffle- ment and-or delectation of the loc- al players.
