Summerside Notes.
Summersipz, May 1.
A valuable mre was stolen from thes able
of Mr. Thomas Schurman, Wilmot Creek,
on Tuesday night last. Mr. Schurman
tracked the animal towards this town, and
found her with a bridle on in a field a short distance from here.
Capt. Peters, in the schooner ‘‘Carrier Dove,’ made two unsuccessful attempts to reach Shediac this week—one on Monday and the other on Wednesday. He had to put back, owing to the large fields of ice drifting about outside.
A schooner was seen stuck fast in the ice off the harbor yesterday.
Mr. Jeremiah McArthur is a candidate for civic honors at the election which takes place on May 7th, to fill the vacant seat in the Town Council. Mr. McArthur has been Waiting patiently for this opportunity to bring himself prominently before the people, and he has succeeded in doing so by publishing a card to the electors of Sum- merside. In this respect, the card will speak for itself. For the benefit of the readers of the Examiner, we quote the fol- lowing, a3 his platform :—-
Ist.—Reconstructi.n of the Police Force, reducing it one half.
2nd.— Policemen also to do the duty of Whartinger, thereby saving the commission paid to that official.
3rd.—Compel the man in charge of roads and pumps to attend to the Fire Engines, and act as policeman _in cases of emergency.
4th.—Awmalgamate the present offices of Town Clerk and Stipendiary Magistrate into ons department, thereby saving prob- ably four hundred dollars per annum.
5th.—The 89 centsper head ofthe popula tion of Summerside, paid by the Dominion Government, should be handed over to the Town, instead of to the Local Government, also our proportion of the Island’s share of the Fishery Award.
I am opposed to a member of the School Board being at the same time agent for the preprietors of the heating apparatus for the new schoui; in short, I shall oppese to the best of my ability, jobbery and corruption in all its forms.
Tt will be seen by the above that Mr. McArthur, if elected, has in view the object of changing the whole aspect of civic affairs.

The Danger Signal.
VOTERS, ATTENTION ! To tie Editor of the Examiner.
Sitr,—From remarks that have fallen from members of the House of Assembly, I am led to suspect that the practice of voting by, ballot is likely to be abolished.
if, in their political prosperity, the follow- ers of the present Government are rash enough to vote for such a retrograde move- ment, then, surely, the handwriting on the wall becomes visible; and the hon. members supporting such a mc-ement will, in all prob- ability, fall deeper than the members of the late Davies faction.
There is too much expense connected with elections. Retrenchment must come in some other way—-not by the suppression of the ballot. Stricter supervision of the printing expenses, less outlay in stationery, one clerk instead of two at the polling stations, a regis- ter of votes made once in ten years—leaving room for insertion of and erasing of names ; in these is a great field for retrenchment.
To take away the ballot would be to out- rage the people; and woe to the Government that bas brought down upon itself the anger of their outraged constituents.

General Todleben, the hero of Sebasto pol, is in better favor with the Czar than he was before the recent war. Although but little more than sixty years old, he was long considered an old-man. His natural disposition and his severe studies in engi- neering made him grave and unpopular.
The new French cable company will have their line working in 1880 if no accident takes places. The prices of cable messages will, it is expected, be soon placed at about twenty-five cents per word. ‘The capital of the presen Anglo-American cable com- pany is more than forty millions of dollars.
The Grand Orange Lodge of British sAmbrica will assemble at Otiawa on the 23rd of July this year, instead of as here- ‘tofore on the 19th eof June. The Grand Black Chapter of B. A. will also meet at the same place the day previous. A large number of delegates to both associations are expected from the old country.
A sad shooting affray occurred at the Me- tropohtan Hotel, Halifax, on Wednesday, when Captain George Greening shot his. wife because she refused to live with him. He claims that she has a very violent temper, and her general conduct has been such that it has driven him to do the desperate dead which he attempted. She, on the other hand, affirms that hé has entirely to blame; that he drinks and ijl uses her to such an extent that it was impossible for her any longer to live with him. It 1s thought she wil! recover from the effects of the bullet, which passed through her right breast, if inflammation does not set in.
The increase of the Russian army by 160 battalions, at this time when no foreign war is contemplated, will serve to show the great alarm that must prevail! on the part of the Russian Government. These additien- al troops, of course, must be intended to keep down the Nihilists. But the remark made by the witty Frenchman, that you ean do anything with a bayonet, except sit on it, is true of Russia. The Czar cannot maintain his tottering throne on bayonets.
The Sporting Life says:—‘‘It is reported that Boyd has determined not to row any more matches. If this is correct, the oak of the 16th of June, for which Elliott is now actively training, will be necessarily with Hanlan. The Sportsman says that the con- tinuance of the cold easte:ly winds greatly icounveniences both Hawden and Hanlan. The former has a severe attack of influenza, Hanlan did not go on the water yesterday, in consequence of stomach disorders.’
The Duke of Norfolk has subscribed £20,- 000 towards the erection of a new church on the site of the present Uratory at Bromptom. The estimated cost of the new structure, whieh will be on a splendid scale, is £75,000—other members of the congregation, which is the most fashionable Roman Catholic one in Lon- don, subscribing £8,000, and the tFathers of the Oratory, out of their private incomes, £25,000.
