Deja vu all over again The Ghost of X-Press Past

Sean McQuaid here, extorting yet an-

other editorial greeting from my tired old keyboard. Do not adjust your newspaper. It really is me, back in the editorial saddle again.

For those of you who know either me or my past work with the X-Press, you may be wondering what the heck I’m doing here when word on the street had it that I was washing my hands of this gig for the foreseeable future. Good question.

Fact is, I identify strongly with the Godfather. I’m not justifying organized (or even disorganized) crime here, nor do I have any particular affection for Al Pacino, but there’s this often-run clip from the Godfather Part ITI that sums up my current situation in a nutshell. The film revolves around the godfather’s ef- forts to legitimize his mob family, to get

out of the crime business. It doesn’t work, and in the clip I so often reflect upon of late, a supremely frustrated godfather growls that ‘‘Every time I try to get out, they pull me back in!”’ I sympathize deeply (of course, the God- father gets more respect from his or- ganization, but you can’t beat the mafia for motivational skills. I don’t even know how I’d go about procuring a horse’s head).

At any rate, I'll be your editor again for the next little while. Your regularly scheduled editor Rebecca Moore left us for various reasons, and I agreed to replace her temporarily for various reasons (hint: as a child, I identified strongly with the seldom- seen Pushover Smurf-- I don’t think there was a Godfather Smurf anyway, but I digress).

Though I'd planned to do some volunteer writing and what-not for the X-Press this year, editing had been the furthest thing from my alleged mind. I have numerous other plans and com- mitments (not the least of which is writing and editing for Zhe Buzz-- shameless plug), so I don’t plan on doing this indefinitely. Among other things, that means the job is open for applications. In the meantime, I'll do the very best I can to make this an

intelligent, entertaining and readable periodical.

Apart from the editing, things should be pretty static in X-Pressville for the time being. We'll still be pub- lishing weekly (though we will skip three more weeks during the year due to budgetary limitations), we’ll still be on the stands Tuesday evenings, and we'll still have our staff meetings on Tuesdays at 6:00 pmin Room 06 of the Main Building.

If you’re at all interested in be- coming involved in the paper, please drop by. We’re always open to new ideas, and we can find something for just about everybody to do. There are no requirements except energy and enthusiasm. Plus, joining the X-Press has its perks: besides valuable experi- ence and heartwarming camaraderie, there are lots of freebies (pizza at all staff meetings, and the opportunity to get free books, music and stuff if you review it). So come on down and join us, or at the very least read us. This is the university paper, and the more in- volved the university community be- comes with it, the more rewarding it will be for all of us.

The U.P.E.I. X-Press is the official student newspaper of the University of Prince Edward Island. The X-Press is published three times a month throughout the aca- demic year. 2,500 copies are distribuited both on and off campus every Tuesday. The X-Press is a member of the Canadian Uni- versity Press(CUP). Anyone may submit to the X-Press but please note the following: - For legal reasons, all submissions must contain aname and phone number. Author's names will be withheld upon request.

X-Press. - Submissions may be dropped off at the

X-Press office (room 06 Main). Mail at your own risk. Submissions are processed more quickly if they are submitted ona 3 1/ 2" or 5 1/4" disk. Disks may be picked up anytime after Monday.

- The deadline for submissions is 9:00 am Friday. Notices and ads are due by noon on Thursday. Any late submissions will be printed in the following issue.
