Canadian election.

As is too well knowr, the intellis! gent part of the electors of Canada| are divided into two great parties, | Liberals and Ccnservatives. The) people who compose each of these | parties can usually give some rea-) son why they vote the way they do, | —that is they have some motive for | being Liberal or Conservative. It) would be well for Canada if it con-| tained only such electors. But, un- | fortunately there is what may be| turned a third party;—and it is this | third party that governs Canada.

To state the case, we may suppose | that all those who study the con- duct of a government while in office have casttheir votes. Part of those are Liberal and part Conservative. Then we come to consider the re- mainder of thefelectorate, the elec- tors of which only differ in the} degree and kind of ignorance they 'display, who do not know nor care | to know how a country is governed }or what good or bad government really means, who wou.d willingly accept one or two dollars---perhaps | a little more, and possibly less, as sufficient reason why they should vote for a certain candidate and if offered three or four more would reason thus: ‘‘ Weill this is more than the other party offered and |] should support such a man for this reason.’’ How often do we hea with shame and humiliation,a man (? say: “‘I have supported this party for so many y@ars and they nevei did anything for me; I always voted for them and they gave me nothing. ’ Oh! that we are obliged to share the privileges of the human race with a man so mean and so con- temptible.

Then we have those miserable creatures, who say to one that they are Liberal and to another that they are Conservative and go to the poll deprived of the little reason

It is the handing | over of the government to whoever | can pay the highest price for votes. |

trol the public treasury are in the best position to bid high for a vote when there can be found men (will-| ing to enter parliament) so vile and | so lacking in those elements and qualities that go to make up what we understand by a man, that they} will take the public money out of the, public treasury and then with the) money of the people buy the peo- | ple’s will ! |

We hear a great deal about pub-! lic morality, the necessity of the| youth of Canada being taught! to form high ideals of life;) and the Government, wisely enough, | places books in the schools filled up| with the best of instruction, more | or less of which is imbibed by the| young Canadian people during their | school life, which in most cases, | ends at sixteen or eighteen. But | as soon as these people reach the) age of twenty-one the government | or members thereof have paidagents | to bribe and buy the will of those people whom thay sent out books and teachers to teach to be good citizens. Not only this, bat before those young people have reached the age at which they become of value at an election, they have, during their| earlier life, seen their fathers and elders selling their votes to those who givethem most. Does the gov- ernment suppose that they will make good citizens in this way? Very little of this unscrupulous debauch- ery in the homes of children will | counteract and overbalance all the | good derived from the printed ideals | in their books and the efforts of their teachers. If this conduct on the part of a government and govern- ment members is calculated to pro- duce good citizens it is strange in. deed, for it is dlametrically epposed to what anyone would consider as public morality in a public. official.
