DETROIT RED WINGS are surely not going to allow the front end of the schedule to be the cause of their missing the. Stanley Cup playo‘fs. The Sid Abel-coached outfit is off to a flying start and after three engagements they were still undefeat- ed after meeting Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Chicazo Black Hawks. They downed New York and Chicago and held the defending cup champions, Montreal Canadiens, to a 1-1 tie last Saturday night inMontreal Fourm.

LAST SEASON just about everybody had a great time at

the expense of the Red Wings. They floundered around from October till March going nowhere but into the basement of the National Hockev League. On occasions, they came up with some good performances but these types of displays were exceptions ra*her than the general rule. On the last night of the regular schedule. Toronto. Maple Leafs used them as a stepping stone into that last playoff spot. - However, ee Sid Abel is a firm believer of forgetting the past and working away at the things that are at hand. There is absolutely nothing that can be done to erase those horrors of the 1958-59 campaign. These events of the past season are re- corded in hockey’s history book and that’s that. ;

But the Red Wings are at least desirious of adding another page to that history book and they intend making it more read- able to Red Wings’ supporters. Most of the heckey exports: main- tain the story of this present season will have an ending Touch similar to that of last season. Thev don’t think the Red Wings have the necessary stuff to make the playoffs and they are as-

_signing them fifth or sixth place in the standings.

SUCH QUICK DISPOSAL of the Detroit club has maddened Mr. Abel and his band and thev are doing their darndest to make these experts look silly. They may not be able to prove the wise ones wrong but right now they are making a fair try at.

By the time this calumn is read. the Wings could have picked up another win at the expense of the Black Hawks. The Chicago team was in Detroit last night repaying the Wings’ visit of Wed- nesdav

Probably Walter Alston’‘s success story with the Los Angeles Dodgers has given Sid Abel some real insviration. Sid knows what the Dodgers did in their first vear on the west coast. They plaved dead for everybody except their ‘cousins’ from Milwau- kee. As a result of their poor display, they wound up deep in the second division of the National League, only one spot removed from the loon’s cellar.

This spring just about everybody passed them by when con- sidering who might be the league renresentative in the world series After all, there was no use wasting time on this bunch of ballolavers who were utterly hopeless in the 1958 campaign. How- ever, the Dodgers’ success story of 1959 has been written and

We think Detroit has greater opposition than did the Dodgers and therefore it will be much more difficult for the Motor City boys to eeme through with a ‘Cinderella’ varn

Mark was one of the Island’s most promising voung athletes until a severe head -injury forced him to the sidelines. He had starred at hockey and baseball in particular and showed «good promise at both these svorts. Even after his accident. Mark didn’t give up his participation in these sports. He kept pegging

However the head injury suffered in the car accident in | Ontario several years ago robbed: Mark’ of his chance of achiev- | ing the top in sports that he loved so well.' He never fully re- | covered from that injury and it was that mishap that finally claimed his life.
