SALMON FEEDING IN FRESH WATER,

i Portland, Oregon. correspondent in | Forest and Stream, recently, says :

} Apropos of the subject of salmon feed- ling in fresh water, and the oft-repeated declaration of the United States Fish Com- | mission, Livingston Stove, Dr. David Starr Jordan and other eminent authorities, that | the salmon do never feed in fresh waters, } [desire to say that, in my opinion, my friend Judge Greene’s views are about the | correct diagnosis of the mooted question. i Jt will be remembered that he has fre- | quently suggested in the columns of the | Forest and Stream that the salmon may feed while in fresh waters upon food quite | as nutritious and strengthening, although | not of so substantial an appearance as that | of their fattening yards in the ocean ; that | the first run of salmon undertake their | pilgrimages at a season of the year when | they are likely to find a good supply of | larvee and other soft or gelatinous sul- stances that would be very uutritious without leaving much sub-tance in the ralmon’s stomach, and that those following would have the advan- tage of the spawn of their predeces- sors which they would not be slow in ap- propriating. Dr, Jordon admitted that | this view might be true, and Charles Hallock declared that such had always | been his opinion. That the salmon are | very fond of their own spawn, no one well | informed about their habits will for a | moment question. I have fished ‘for sal- | mon @ great deal at the Falls of the Wil- liametie, and aside from my own exper- | lence have closely observed the exper- iences of others. QGne day recently I hooked ten Chinooks at the fall with sal- mon spawn for bait. A gentlemen with | me hooked five. Auvther, more lucky, | took twenty-one. Another, sixteen; and |} numerous fishermen at the same place and | time took from threeto a dozen. They | touk the spawn greedily, not only on this particular day, buton many other days. In fact I presume that several thousand salmon have been taken at the falls this months and last with salmon roe for bait. It seems to me that these facts indicate a disposition on the part of the salmon to feed in fresh water. At least I desire to add my proofs to the great ma-s of evi dence in support of Judge Greene’s theory. : Nee — — U.S. CRUISER CHICAGO

Visited by the Prince of Wales and Puke of York,

During the fetes in Londen, some time ago, in honor of the officers of the Ameri- ean erniser Chicago, which was then ly- ing at Gravesend, the Prince of Wales ex- pressed to Admira! Erben and Capt. Mahan a desire to visit the vessel the next time she was at Cowes. The Pvince’s en- gagement to visit the Chicago was fixed at a recent dinner given on board the royal yacht Osborne. Accordingly the Prince’s pinnace arrived alongside the Chicago at exactly seven bells. As he stepped aboard the cruiser a salute of 21 guns was fired, the British ensign was hoisted at the fore- stick, and the yards were manned by the crew. Admiral Erben, Capt. Mahan, Lt. Commander Potter and Lt. Clover greeted the royal party as they came aboard. The Prince of Wales wore the uniform of a British admiral and the Duke of York that of a post captain, while the men of | the Prince’s suite were attired in uni-

forms of their respective ranks. A guard | of marines was up on the port side of the | quarter deck and they were carefully in- spected by the Prince. The sun was shin- ing brightly and the brilliant uniforms made a most picturesque scene.

At the request of the Prince, all the of- ficers of the Chicago were pressnted to him in turn. The royal guest was then escorted to all the different parts of the ship, except the sky bay. This latter part of the ship the Prince especially desired to see, but was unable to do so as an acci- dent had happened to a seaman. The Prince remarked he had understood the American medical department was the best equipped of any in the world. The members of the royal party repeatedly ex- pressed their admiration of the ship, and the appearance andicleanliness of the ship. On quitting the Chicago, the Prince of Wales expressed the pleasure that his visit had afforded him.

Warsaw, Ang. 1].—Extensve coal mines near Dombrows, Government ef Grando, have been burning since yester- day afternoon. The fire started by an ex- plosion of sas when the full foree of men was undir ground. Comparatively few miners were rescued. Latest reports are that several hundred mén are entombed, and all hop: of saving them is aban- doned.

Wixnirpec, Aug. 11.—The Deminion Government has decided to set apart all | the heavily timbered lands in Manitoba, west of the Red River, as permanent tim- ber reserves, conserved as sources of fuel supply for settlers, All timber lands not already taken up will be withdrawn from | settlement whether held by the Hudson | Bay or railway companies. Among the | tracts already divided up and withdrawn | from settlementare the Bush lands in | Turtle, Moose and Riding Mountains, and in the Touchwood Hillis, besides other scattered patches of timber of leas extent.

Victoria, B. C., Aug. 11.—There is mutiny in company 4, British Columbia Brigade Garrison Artillery. On Tuesday evening the company was ordered to par- ade in preparation for the annual inspec- tion. The men turned out well, but re- fused to drill unless une or two newly ap- pointed officers resigned. Lieutenant fownley thereupon announced that no

AN UNFORTUNATE WEDDING.

Despatches from St. Petersburg tell the storv of an accident which befel the Grand Dnehess Xenia and the Grand Duke Michaelovitch shortly after their marriage on August 6th. The Grand Duchess and her husband were driving from the im- perial palace to Chateau Kopscha, near Krasnoe-Selo, where they were to pass the next three days. They had just left the wedding dinner party, and drove along the lighway with a small escort and a few members of the imperial Rus-

sian family. The whole district along the route was ablaze with fireworks, which rendered the horses restless and blinded the coachman Upon

nearing a bridge, on which Greek fire was burning, the horses bolted. The coach- man could not see to guide them and the carriage was thrown over the embankment near the bridge and upset in the ditch. The bridal couple were thrown to. the ground with great force. Both of the grand duchess’ wrists were sprained, her face was scrstched, her body was bruised and her clothing torn. The grand duke suffered less severely. The coachman was injured internally, The bridal couple were placed in another carriage and taken to the Chateau Kopschs. The Czar and Czarina were summoned in haste,but when they arrived at the chateau were informed by the doctors that their danghter was not dangerously hurt.
