Did you know...

17 out of 29 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries have zero tuition.

The President of Ireland credits her country’s recent economic boom to free post-secondary education.

Canada has the second highest tuition for publicly funded post-secondary education institutions out of all OECD countries. Only Japan has higher.

27 out of 29 OECD countries have a system of national grants. Only Japan and Canada do not.

The average student debt load in 1990 was approximately $8,500. The average student debt load in 1997 was $25,000.

Jean Monty, CEO of Bell Canada, is the Chair of the Millennium Scholarship Foundation. Bell Canada owed the Federal Government $1.9 billion several years ago.

$2.3 billion has been cut from education alone since 1993. Youth unemployment has not dipped below 15% in this decade.

Jean Chretien used to be a student activist in Quebec. In BC, Jean Chretien pepper sprayed student activists for peacefully demonstrating against the APEC summit held on their campus.

In 1995, the largest student demonstration in Canadian history took place nationwide. Over 100,000 students made the federal government back down from a regressive loan system.

Sexual Harassment

Committee at UPEI

Yes! There is a Sexual Harassment Committee at UPEI.

It is made up of one member each of the teaching staff: Dr. David Sims, Anatomy & Physiology (566-0812), Chair; support staff: Barbara Curley, Office of the Dean of Science, (566-0382); student services: Robert Pritchett (626-4368), and nominee of the President: Dr. Roberta MacDonald, School of Business, (566-0348); and two members of the student body: Matt McQuaid, c/o Dept. of Chemistry, (566-0314), and Pauline Tran, c/o Student Union, 566-0648. Any mem- ber of the Committee can be contacted for information or aid in sexual harassment cases.

According to the UPEI Sexual Harassment Policy, “sexual harassment, whatever its form, should be met with censure and not allowed to diminish the rights of faculty, staff and students; it is not tolerated at the University of Prince Edward Island, and the University will make every reason- able effort to ensure that no one is subjected to sexual harass- ment.”

What is sexual harassment? Sexual harassment may include, but may not be limited to, behaviour such as: “crude, offensive or suggestive remarks, gender based insults and taunting, leering, and humour based on stereotypes, directed at a person because of his/her gender or sexual orientation; or unwanted and unsolicited sexual advances (including innu- endoes and ee remarks inviting intimacy and sexual contact) and physical contact which take place in the context of academic, professional or work-related transactions; or solicitation of sexual activity by expressed or implied romise of reward or threat of reprisal; or coerced sexual relations.” (UPEI Sexual Harassment Policy, as amended by Senate on 29 January 1993) The complete Policy can be found on the World Wide Web - www.upei.ca, and by selecting “Official University Documents”.
