By ITARCY ODONNELL OTTAWA. Sept, d3 — (OP) George Drew, Progressive Conser- vative leader. moved in the Com- mons today to delay abolition of appeals to the judicial committee of the Privy Council in London, but he met solid opposition from all other parties.

Prime Minister St. Laurent said he could not accept a proposal that the bill be given a six-month hoist. He was supported by M.J». Coldwell, 0.0.1". leader, and Solon Low, Social Credit leader.

With a bill providing for aboli- tion of appeals up for second reading -- adoption in principle- Mr. Drew moved that it: be given a six-month hoist to permit further study of the effect on Canadians.

Mr.. Drew explained his motion was aimed at permitting study as suggested by the Canadian Bar As- sociation at its recent annual con- ventlon.

The Association urged‘in a, reso- lution that the legislation be de- layed to permit the public time to study effects on provincial and minority rights,

Debate Postponed

Debate on the amendment. and the bill was postponed until next week without any formal vote be- ing taken.

Before .movirig the amendment, Mr, Drew suggested a constitution- al committee be set. up to carry out that study.

Mr. St. Laurent said similar committees had been established in the past and "they got us no- where." The question of abolition has been given consideration over a long period.

"During the last election cam- paign there was consideration by

the electorate." said the Prime Minister. "It was the announced policy oif the Party I have the

honor to lead t0 abolish appeals to the Privy Council, I may be mis- taken, but I take it that we re- ceived from the electorate of Can- ada a mandate to carry out that policy."

Many friends throughout the Province will regret to learn of the death last evening at her home, Brighton Road. of Mrs. Ellen Jenkins, M.B.E., widow of the late Dr. Stephen R. Jenkins. She had passed hcr eighty-seventh birthday

on Sept. 3rd, and had been in falling health for the past two years.

Mrs. Jenkins was the oldest liv- ing member of St. Joseph's Con- vent Sodallty. and was the found- er of St, Elizabeth Aid of St. Vin- cent’s Orphanage. She was also in- strumental in forming the Altar Society of St. Dunstan's Basilica 3nd a, similar organization in con- nection with the Church of the Holy Redeelner. She was active in many humanitarian causes, par- ticularly in the Red Cross Society, and was awarded the M.B.E. some

Former Ch'town Mon Dies In Sydney

SYDNEY, ‘l.S., Sept. 23 -—- (CP) —John Mac'$'herson, 72. died to- day at his work in the Sydney Steel Plant. A native of Char- lottetown, he came to Sydney in 1917 and was employed as a ma- chinist at the plant.

Devalualion Hits Maine Fishermen

AUGUSTA, Mo. Sept. 23 —-(AP) —Main'e's commissioner of sea and shore fisheries said today that the devaluation of sterling and the Canadian dollar may force the United States fishing industry to ask for Federal subsidies.

OTTAWA, Sept, 23—-(Special)-- Interest in Prince Edward Island as a prospective source of seed po- tatoes is manifested in a letter from Hon, S, K. Kirpalani, High Commissioner for India received today by W. Chester S. McLure, Progressive Conservative member for Queen's, The High Commis- sinners letter is in reply to one from Mr. McLure who had been informed of the difficulties con- fronting potato-growers of India in obtaining high quality sced in suf- ficlent quantity to meet, their re- quirements. In his last paragraph, Mr, Kir- palanl alluded to a list of top po- tato experis ln the Provincial Gov- ernment service, prominent grow- ers, and shippers which Mr. Mc- Lure sent the High Commissioner for his information and guidance. When suggesting that Prince Ed- ward Island might be able to con- tribute both seed potatoes and "know-how" of culture which would be of value to India Mr. McLure Wrote:

“Prince Edward Island is fam- ous for its seed potatoes which it supplies to growers in such liot climates as Texas and Florida in the United States and also some of the South American countries.

"It seems to me quite possible that this same seed might produce important results in Indln."

The Queen's member also sug- gested that possibly one of the In- dian High Commissioner's attaches familiar with agriculture might care to visit Prince Edward Is- land at the height of the potato harvesting season to observe har- vesting and shipping methods.

Wiener-Roast Slaying Leads To Death Sellielltfi

WELLAND, Ont., Sept. 23 (CP) - George Szendrey was sen- fenced today to be hanged Dec_ 7 for the Wiener-roast murder of 18-year-old Harold Sneztsky, Buf- falo high school student.

A Jury that deliberated for two hours and 40 minutes brought in a verdict of guilty early this af- ternoon. Witnesses testified that Szenclrey. 28-year-old laborer of nearby Humberstone village, was the man who appeared at the wicner roast party May 14, armed with a pistol. and said: "I want the girls."

Psychiatrists testified yesterday that Szendrey was sane.

Szendrey said he had. been drinking heavily the night of the shooting and "blacked out."

Sneztsky was killed and a com- panion Richard Joseph. also of Buffalo, was taken to hospital with bullet wounds in arms and chest. Their girl friends. Geraldine Fiorlto. l8 and Lydia Lulsi. 18. were treated at their Buffalo homes for shock.

Joseph testified that a man. carrying a heavy automatic pistol. shot Sneztsky through the head and fired again. dropping Joseph. When the killer put the gun in his belt, Joseph grabbed it and fired twice missing the gunman at point-blank range_

Police arrested Saendrey 40 yards from the scene of the shoot- ing.

High United States policy makers were of the view that it does not bring war any closer. For one thing they said the United States has a four-year headslart in atomic bomb manufacture. They figured that the Soviets would be wary of starting an atomic struggle in which retaliation
